Two Celebrations
Celebration #1
#1 - AdvancED Accreditation visit
In 2014, the School District of South Milwaukee was the first system in southeast Wisconsin to be accredited as an entire district. This week, five years after their last visit, AdvancED (pronounced "Advanced ED") returned to see how we have progressed as a school and as a system since the 2014 visit and provide us feedback to continue to grow for the good of our students. In particular, on Tuesday, two reviewers (one person from the metro area and another from New Hampshire) spent four hours at Lakeview, visiting many of our classrooms for 20 minutes each, talking with two teams of teachers, and talking with one panel of students. Some of you filled out surveys for this visit a few months ago. At this point, we are not sure what the final report will say, but I can say the reviewers were impressed with Lakeview, our teachers, and our students. We are not the same as we were 5 years ago. We're not even the same as we were 1 year ago, and that's how it should be! The only constant is our deep desire to be the best we can for our students, and this week's visit reflects that commitment.
Celebration #2
We have largely completed our Forward testing. Thank you for encouraging your students through this process. Every student in grades 3 and 5 took six tests. Every student in 4th grade took 11 tests (the state requires social studies and science at 4th grade along with the math and English-Language Arts tests that the other grade take).
Your students showed excellent perseverance and engagement during the testing. We are very proud of them. These tests are used to measure student achievement, student growth, and how we are closing gaps between student demographic groups. Along with student attendance (which is why we keep talking about attendance and tardies), these are the factors that make up our State of Wisconsin school report card. In particular, Lakeview's rating is heavily weighted for student growth. We are looking for students to beat their expected growth scores. Although we will not have the results until late Summer, I am enthused by our students' work ethic during testing. Thank you!
