2024 LEIKO USHIYAMA APRIL, 24-25-26-27
Borris Lace Pine Needles felt
Pine Needles is one of the wet felting techniques used to make a fine lacy felt. Leiko was inspired by the scenery of pine needles spread on snow nearly 30 years ago.
This class is one of the variations of the Pine Needles technique. You can purchase my hand dyed materials, 16 micron merino and 50% silk mixed 18 micron merino to create your wrap. We are going to design the shape, decide where to place the Pine Needles lace and choose colour combinations. We will start by making a small sample to understand the basics and to have a better understanding to design your wrap.We are going to learn basic to intermediate skills of the Pine Needles technique.
Basic felting experience is required.

KRISTY KUN May 2 untill 5 and 15 until 18
With Kristy’s background in furniture construction and engineering, she is especially drawn developing new methods that combine her experiences. Through her engineered layouts of complex joinery in wool, she creates a new material that seamlessly transforms into a third dimension, capturing the rhythmic underwater life of the textiles as they float and undulate within her hands. These textiles are sculpted into forms that capture a biomorphic fragility of the living world.
2024 IRIT DULMAN SEPTEMBER, 25-26-27-28-29
5day masterclass botanical print and natural dye
In the first part of the class you will learn about the fundamental aspect of my botanical printing technique for cellulose. I will teach you how to mordant your fabrics in an innovative way that will allow you to use the mordant as a creative tool and to obtain different results according to your wish. We will experiment with two different mordants and their variations. I will teach how to bundle in different ways to obtain clear and sharp print on the natural background and on dyed backgrounds with different tannins.
After you have practiced the fundamental you will then be ready to add more fun to the work by dyeing the fabrics with different natural dyes. This will expend the results and the possibilities that are achieved so far. You will learn how to get a discharge effect among other effects and we will explore the relationships between a solid colour obtained in the dye pot with the colours of the printing plant. We will work with 5 dyes: weld (reseda), logwood, cochineal and madder and with Indigo.

2024 SAAR SNOEK - OCTOBER 4-5-6
An unconventional approach to sculptural felt. In this 3 day workshop we will make an organic fantasy sculpture. In the process you will discover new ways to construct sculptural shapes and learn how to connect felt indifferent stages of the process. In a playful way we create opportunities for technical analysis (what happens inside the felt during the process) and find the balance between control and creative freedom.

2024 DAGMAR BINDER - October 24-25-26-27
In this class we want to explore different techniques of multi-layer surfaces in feltmaking, which can be applied to wearables as well as fine art objects. Starting with a few samples, we will have a look at the basic components that will play an important role in the planning of your wallhanging. Suitable wool types or combinations of materials We'll have a look at the characteristics of batts, prefelt (needlepunch), tops and their interaction, experiment with several ways of laying out fibers and see, how the initial setting influences consistency and the final shape of a piece of felt. Fibre directions (and quantity of wool) will define where and how much your felt would shrink, if forms would come out solid and clear, wild and fringy or elastic and stretchable. Connections and position of resists In general we'd always have 2 main components: a base rug and a certain amount of lamellae / petals/ fins/ scales... sitting on its surface. And we are bound to one technical fact: we need to do our layout in a flat position first and can unfold 3d elements only after fairly good prefelting. This requires some spatial thinking, using resists and planning their positions, to keep overlapping layers separate and define in which way the structure will unfold later. Your individual wall-hanging Please bring ideas, photo(s) or sketches (f.ex. of natural objects or structures) that inspire you and can be a starting point for your creation. Together we will have a close look at these sketches, find out which aspects are the most interesting for you and discuss suitable technique(s). There's always more than one way to go... you'll have to decide what to focus on.

GLADYS PAULUS - November 1-2-3-4-5-6 FACES OF EXTINCTION
Since 2010, Gladys has taught more than 1,000 textile enthusiasts and professionals. The workshops are in demand nationally and internationally, and she has undertaken accredited training courses . Many of the students return year after year, even choosing to take the same workshop multiple times in order to deepen their understanding of the techniques and approaches she offers.
All animals chosen have to be picked from the IUCN Red List for Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/) and all student participants will be asked to do some research on their chosen animal, as well as prepare a sign containing some basic written facts (more information on this is provided in the Student Materials List). A wide variety of animals will be created in this masterclass, with a corresponding range of techniques, including textural and sculptural effects, the application of fur and hair, fins, horns and more. Students will learn how to calculate, design and create a base resist template which will become the starting point for an animal mask. Making a realistic mask in felt requires a combined approach of thorough planning, intuitive felt making and methodical, yet responsive sculpting. This process is time consuming and challenging, and it is imperative that only students with the right level of experience attend this masterclass. Without the relevant experience and understanding of wool, students will struggle and may not be able to finish their project.
