Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby families,
I hope everyone is well and May the 4th be with you to all Star Wars fans! It is Teacher Appreciation Week and I want to give a heartfelt thanks to our dedicated teaching staff. This Spring, you've faced unprecedented challenges, and you've risen to them with grace, care, and excellence. Your dedication has kept children safe, engaged, and, most importantly, in community. We see you, and we thank you! I have been impressed with your willingness to learn new technology and flexibility as you have tried your best to adapt during these unprecedented times. Read this interesting perspective here . It would be great if families could send an email note to your teachers this week to show how much you care. A shout out to Penny Cifuentes and Unidos PTO for creating a virtual Teacher Appreciation week of activities complete with Meditation Monday, Zumba Tuesday, Art Wednesday, Thankful Thursday with Yoga classes, and Thank You Friday(see photos below)! Happy ¡Cinco de Mayo! to everyone! Finally, it is also Mother's Day this coming Sunday(and 10 de mayo in the majority of Latin America as well), so I want to extend a big, virtual hug to all mothers--HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
Teaching and learning continue at home following these district guidelines on page 4 of the document. I want to thank Unidos PTO for the compilation of online resources for your convenience in English: here and Español : aquí
TK-1st grade will receive new At Home Learning packets this Friday, May 8th: Last Names beginning with A-L 9:00-12:00; Last Names beginning with M-Z 12:00-3:00. We will also be returning students materials for 1st and 2nd graders at that time. Please put a Sign inside your windshield with your Child's name and Teacher's name so it will make it easier for us to give back your child's materials during the pick up.
TK-1st parents a reminder to help your child during the Google Meets to arrive on time, dressed appropriately, microphone muted until called upon to participate, please do not allow them to eat during the Meets if at all possible, and try and minimize distractions as much as possible.
Recently, I have been receiving more emails about how to help at home from 2nd-5th grade parents. In the last newsletter I shared some ideas for managing At Home Learning, but here are a few key points:
2nd -5th grade Parents
- Set a schedule and routine for learning
- Minimize distractions
- Help hold your child accountable for their learning(remember to give choices).
- Communicate with your child's teacher regularly.
- Check Google Classroom and Class Dojo regularly.
- Ensure that ALL completed lessons/activities are submitted
2nd -5th grade Students
- Do your best and keep trying!
- Check Google Classroom and Class Dojo regularly for assignments and Meetings.
- Come to Google Meets on time, dressed appropriately, not eating, and with microphone muted until called upon to participate.
- Ask your teacher if you have questions about your work via Office Hours or email.
- Submit completed work to your Google Classroom regularly.
- Complete your lessons/activities to the best of your ability.
You may be aware that the Redwood City School District Board of Trustees rejected the recommendation to permanently name our school as Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School. The School Board’s official 0-5 vote took place at the last public meeting on Wednesday, April 22nd. While not many individuals spoke during the two scheduled public hearings, some of the parents who did speak said that the site should have a new name as we’ve become a new school. The Board members have requested for the School Naming Committee to submit new suggestions to Superintendent Baker without the mention of Adelante or Selby Lane.
The Board's decision has forced the School Naming Committee to reconvene to come up with new suggestions for the permanent name of our school before the end of this school year. We have decided to look through the list of other names that were suggested by several of you earlier this year and create a list of names to vote for your top three choices. In addition, there will be a write-in section for you to suggest any other name that you would like the committee to consider. We will send the Naming Ballot out via email/text this Friday, May 8th. I sincerely hope that everyone takes the opportunity to complete the new Naming Ballot so we can get your valuable input on this important decision. I understand that this naming process brings up hard feelings around the schools closure decision from last year and it has been difficult for everyone(myself included), but we need to stay positive. After all, we are united in our vision and philosophy around Dual Language Immersion and a tremendous amount of community building and progress has happened this year. I thank you for remaining engaged and participating in this process! A reminder that Board Policy dictates that the committee recommend 3 names to Dr. Baker who makes the final selection to present to the Board for approval. The next Board meeting is scheduled for this coming Wednesday, May 6. We have until the end of June for the School Board to vote on our school’s final new name.
The Unidos PTO needs your help to establish a PTO board for next school year, 2020-21. If you are interested in taking a more active role at our school, this is a great way to contribute your time and work with a wonderful group of people towards the Unidos mission: to support the education and welfare of all Adelante Selby students. Please take a moment to look at the attached table with descriptions of positions on the Unidos board. If you are interested, please contact unidosyadelante@gmail.com. We are happy to answer any questions you may have, as well. The next Unidos board meeting will be Tuesday, May 5th at 6pm, via Zoom. The final meeting of the year will be Tuesday, June 2 at 6pm, via Zoom, and board members for the 2020-21 school year will be voted on at this meeting. Finally, please remember that as a PTO, everyone in our community is a member of Unidos and can attend board meetings throughout the year. Being on the board of Unidos gives you the right to vote at Board meetings along with carrying out the duties of your position.
Please note that the school playgrounds(including play structures and swings) and field are closed. The general public should not be on the school campus.
Please visit our school website , Adelante Selby Facebook Page and our PTO/Unidos webpage and social media accounts: unidospto.org, Facebook and Instagram for more information.

Director Warren
