RHHS Wildcats: News You Can Use
#WEareRH - Summer Edition - June 28, 2018
Taking care of our students - school safety
We believe in being as proactive as possible. This means that we expect teachers to teach with doors closed and locked. We keep exterior doors locked, and we actively inspect this throughout the day as we are moving through the campus. We ask parents/guardians to see their IDs, and visitors sign-in and out when on campus.
Our School Resource Officers are actively moving about our campuses throughout the day. Multiple times a day they check parking lots to verify that all cars parked on campus are registered, and they investigate cases of unregistered cars. Our SROs walk the campuses during classes and are visible during class changes, and they are among the students at all lunches. Our SROs make it a point to know and get to know our students. The support provided by our SROs and Richmond Hill Police Department is the very best, bar none.
I ask students to limit movement outside of classes during instructional time. The safest place for students, I believe, is in the classroom behind the locked door. During instruction, if a student has to be out of class, I expect that they have a hall pass. Oftentimes, students out of class are stopped by an adult to make sure they are getting where they need to go without haste.
Several times during the year RHHS will have safe school searches. These searches are unplanned. Contrary to popular belief, even I do not know the days and times these will happen. Locations of the school to search are chosen at random. I will say that most of the feedback I get about these is that we should have them more often.
Teachers receive regular school safety training. RHHS has staff members who are trained throughout the year on how to react to a variety of different safety and health issues. This training is provided by local law enforcement officials, heathcare professionals and emergency responders.
Finally, we work tirelessly it feels like to keep you informed. That being said, I realize we can always do a better job with communication. One way you can help me make sure you get all of the information I share is to keep your contact information up-to-date with us. We will use email and text message alerts to notify you about school safety situations as soon as it is logistically possible. It is imperative that we have accurate email and cell phone numbers on file. In August, when we ask you to review the demographic information papers, please do this carefully.
I am always willing to speak to you if you have questions or concerns. I take my responsibility to keep your children safe very seriously. I can assure you, there is nothing more humbling than to know you are expected to keep 2200 students and 250 adults safe and healthy, day in and day out each school year.
Together, we will continue to keep RHHS and RIchmond Hill safe.

Debi McNeal
Principal
