Mill Creek Magic Messages

News and Updates from Mr. Ortman and Mr. Murtha 9/9/2022

Back to School Nights - Back to Back!

Mill Creek began its slate of Back to School Nights last Tuesday, welcoming parents of 1st and 2nd Grade students to join us on the evening of Tuesday, September 6 and then having our 3rd and 4th Grade parents join us the following night - Wednesday, September 7. Parents had an opportunity to literally sit in their child's classroom seat and learn about what they would be learning and experiencing during the upcoming school year! We were thrilled to see such a strong turnout (no surprise from our super supportive community!), and we were so glad that our parents had the opportunity to view the classroom and school day through something of the "lens" of their child. We trust our attendees had an enjoyable and informative evening!

We look forward to seeing our 5th and 6th Grade parents next Monday!

Student Laptop Expectations

Central Bucks Technology & Innovation Department is asking us to stress the importance of laptop case use for students (grades 3-6) when they transport their laptops and when laptops are not in use for extended periods of time. At school, we will be stressing the importance and reminding students of the need to put their laptop in its case during these times (e.g. when taking a laptop from their classroom to specials class). We ask that you stress these practices at home, too. Thank you for your support!

Additionally, if your child loses or misplaces their laptop case, please reach out to the Mill Creek Main Office.

FROM MR. ORTMAN and MR. MURTHA

Now 2 weeks into the school year, we have had lots of opportunities to visit classrooms and gain insights into both what is happening in classrooms and how classrooms look and feel. Some of what we are seeing is "old hat," and that is a good thing! Among these, we are seeing small group instruction, flexible seating, interactive learning activities, and wonderful classroom communities from both visual and other sensory perspectives. However, we are also seeing some new things. Most notably, many of our teachers now have Clear Touch Screens, which provide tremendous visual clarity for instruction and access to a plethora of educational apps. for extension, enrichment, and reteaching. Students have commented about them, "We can see the screen without having to turn out the lights!" which has them more excited than you would have thought!

We are grateful to have the most normalcy we have had in school for quite some time, and we also appreciate that we educate in a district where our teachers and students have access to powerful and novel learning tools each and every year!

Thanks to our students, teachers, staff, and supportive community for a great start to the school year!

Important Information - MTSS and STAR Reading and Math Assessments

Parents and Guardians,

Central Bucks School District is committed to ensuring that each child makes significant academic progress. To do this, we have been implementing a research-based process to link academic support with specific student learning needs. This process is known as a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and provides all students with timely and targeted instruction based upon the results of various assessment tools in reading and mathematics.

The universal assessments provide baseline data that will allow our educators to design and deliver targeted instruction to ensure that your child is learning the appropriate skills at each grade level. These screening assessments are typically administered to all students two or three times per year. Student and grade level scores are reviewed by the MTSS School Team. Using the data, teams identify students or student groups in need of targeted, skill-specific intervention or enrichment. The use of universal assessment tools refines and strengthens our efforts to help all of our students be successful by allowing us to take positive and preventative measures as early as possible.

The universal assessment tools in math and reading are very similar to tools we use every day to help us determine where students might have gaps in knowledge and need assistance. They replace the tools we have used in previous years such as the Developmental Reading Assessment (or DRA), the Leveled Reading Assessment (or LRA), and the CB Math Screening Assessment.

The Star Assessments by Renaissance, which were adopted by the district last year, are completed by students electronically in class. More information for parents is available on the Renaissance website at Parent's Guide - Star Assessments | Renaissance. The Star Assessments are simply one tool amongst many that Central Bucks uses to help determine and deliver timely, targeted instruction for our students. As in the past with our prior assessments, you will be notified if your child is in need of intervention or enrichment supports.

Thank you for your willingness to assist us in building a system of student supports that is linked directly to data. This will ensure that each of our students has the opportunity to receive the assistance they need to achieve academic success. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions.

Respectfully,

Shawn Ortman – Principal

John Murtha – Assistant Principal

Instructional Spotlight - Ms. Sorenson, 3rd Grade

Students in Ms. Sorenson's 3rd Grade class all already on a writing frenzy! This past week, they were hard at work filling their Writer's Notebooks with stories about summer adventures. Not surprisingly, there were many beach stories, along with visits to parks (both national and local) and sporting events. These 3rd Grade students were impressive in the volume of their writing and in their use of descriptive language to help the reader feel as if they were actually there! We can only imagine how much your writing skills will grow this year when you are off to such an incredible start!

District Laptop and iPad Care

Central Bucks Innovation and Technology Department has asked us to communicate the following regarding District-issued laptop and iPad care...

  • Please encourage your children to use their laptop/iPad bags for carrying devices in school, at home, and to and from each location.
  • Please encourage your children to report issues/problems with their devices, so they can be properly address and fixed as soon as possible.
  • The laptop/iPad payment fee covers accidental damage. Intentional damage may result in a family being billed for the damage.

Schools will be communicating these messages in school as well.

We appreciate your support!

Inclement Weather Procedures for Car Riders - Dismissal

We ask that, on inclement weather days, car riders post a placard with the student(s) family last name, so we can call in names for quicker dismissal. We will do our best to send a message out earlier in the day if we believe inclement weather dismissal is necessary for car riders. Feel free to use the placard template below if you find it helpful.
