The Meeks Messenger
2nd Edition, Vol. 18 December 2019
Hey, hey Mustangs!
This year we have a unique opportunity to potentially send 5 teachers to TCEA (pending PTA funding approval). This is a conference focused on technology integration in the classroom. If you are interested in learning more about how to effectively integrate technology to enhance the curriculum, this is the conference for YOU!
Please let Russell know if you are interested in attending no later than Friday, December 13th!
In the spirit of continuous improvement and wanting to reflect on the new year to come, we would like all staff to complete the anonymous survey below in reflection of the administration team. It is our goal to have 100% participation so that all voices are heard. Please have this completed by this Friday, Dec. 13th. Link to Survey
This is a reminder to turn in your textbook receipts to Maggie by Friday, December 20th.
With the amount of new materials we have, it is important that we complete a mid-year audit to ensure a smooth end of year textbook audit. Please let Maggie know if you did not receive a textbook receipt.
Your team leaders now have an emergency backpack in the event that we are not able to re-enter the building after an evacuation. We will have copies of attendance rosters in Team Lead Boxes very shortly. Please make sure to have these rosters in a folder and keep inside the emergency backpack.
Please close all doors when evacuating for a fire drill. There were several doors that were open during today's drill. A closed door helps to contain a fire. Thank you for your help with this safety concern!
As the year comes to a close, we are receiving many discipline referrals. Most of the referrals are during recess or after school. Please spread, out covering the field, during recess and actively monitor behavior after school at your duty location.
Don't forget to share our story with the world by using #TheGreatestParkside and #1LISD on Twitter! You can also tag our campus @Parkside_ES. Your PLN (Professional Learning Network) wants to learn from you! Y'all have so many great things to share! Enter your Twitter Handle here so we can follow you!
Thank you for all you do!

Taking Leave Days...
Employee Handbook: Discretionary Leave
Leave taken at an employee’s discretion that can be scheduled in advance is considered discretionary leave. An employee wishing to take discretionary personal leave must submit a request 48 hours in advance of the anticipated absence to his or her supervisor or designee.
Discretionary personal leave will be subject to the availability of substitutes, and consideration of the educational impact on the campus/department, and the ongoing responsibilities of the job. None of the restrictions on leave shall in any way restrict an employee from requesting leave that is arranged for in advance with the Principal or supervisor and approved. Failure to receive approval prior to taking leave for discretionary absences may result in denial of the request and subsequent loss of pay.
Discretionary leave for campus employees may not be granted on the following days:
- Days stipulated in the school calendar as professional, staff development, or workdays.
- Days and evenings set aside for open house and other special activities.
- The first and last ten student days of the school year.
- The three days immediately preceding or following school holidays.
- Days scheduled for end-of-semester and end-of year exams.
- Days scheduled for state tests and profile tests.
Process for Requesting Discretionary (Personal) Leave:
- Submit a Personal Absence Request via this site
- Once your request is approved, you need to put the absence into AESOP
- It is your responsibility to find a substitute for the absence.
Leave Due to Illness
Any employee who is absent more than three consecutive days because of a personal or family illness must submit a medical certification from a qualified health care provider (doctor’s note) upon request confirming the specific dates of the illness, the reason for the illness, and, in the case of personal illness, the employee’s fitness to return to work.
Non-discretionary Leave
Leave taken for personal or family illness, a family emergency, a death in the family, or active military service is considered non-discretionary leave. Reasons for this type of leave allow very little, if any, advance planning. Employees should use their accrued leave for these instances, including time for bereavement leave.
If you have specific questions regarding leave days, please stop by! I am happy to talk you through any questions or special circumstances. Additionally, here is the link to the Employee Handbook for full leave policies.
