A Message From the Principal
In Parshat Terumah, Moshe is given detailed instructions on how to build a Mishkan. Hashem says, “And this is the offering that you shall take from them: gold, silver, and copper” (25:3). Rashi comments that these materials, gold, silver, and copper, were all given voluntarily; each person gave what his heart inspired him to give, except for the silver, which they gave equally, a half-shekel for each individual.
I read this and see it as a metaphor for what is needed to build a community. Every person has to contribute, participate and conform in some similarly equal way, while at the same time investing in an additional way their talents, passions, and expertise.
Our community can be thought of as many micro communities that are part of our larger school community, which is part of our larger Jewish community, etc. One of our micro school communities is our learning space of 17 kindergarteners and their teachers. Our morot have worked with our children this year to build a community that reflects the building of the Mishkan. Each child contributes everyday in a similar way and each child also contributes and is valued for their talents and passions. The community strength and culture that the morot have worked to cultivate with their students in the classroom is exceptional and one we should value, applaud and work to emulate.
In an effort to build, strengthen, and celebrate our YLS community, our Parents Association will be hosting a Melava Malka for current and new parents on Motzei Shabbat, February 27th, at 8:00 pm at the home of Lauren and George Danneman.
In addition, in an effort to build and strengthen our larger Lower Merion community, I will be participating in a panel with other local educational and religious leaders entitled "Nurturing Emunah in our Children in the 21st Century" on Motzei Shabbat February 20th, 8:30pm at Kohelet Yeshiva High School.
On a personal level, to help strengthen our community, I will be reaching out by phone to each YLS family between now and Pesach to touch base and connect.
I look forward to joining you at both these events and to continue working with you, our morot, and our students to strengthen our community.
