Love and Logic - Parenting Class
Mrs. Simmons started her Love and Logic parenting class. This is such a great opportunity for our community. If you haven't heard about this opportunity, please reach out to our school councilor. Great kids are home made and we as a community school are here to help! Title 1 supports this parent engagement night with snacks and help with providing babysitting while parents attend this opportunity.
Thank you for attending the Trunk-or-Read event!
For those of you who attended the Trunk-or-Read event, thank you for coming! We served over 400 meals and had a ton of fun seeing students and family's in their costumes. We did have a video for parents via a QR code. Many missed the video so I've included it here. There are also some great links from the Literacy Guru's that help Park Country School District No. 6. Thanks for taking a few minutes to check out these resources.

Five tips to use when supporting 3rd-5th grade readers
1. Read aloud
Purpose: This gives students the opportunity to hear fluent reading and be exposed to vocabulary words they are unable to decode independently.
2. Discuss and define unknown words that kids encounter when reading.
Purpose: strong grade level vocabulary and background knowledge are indicators of how well a student will comprehend what they are reading.
3. Encourage all reading.
While teaching middle school during the rise of the graphic novel, I often had parents tell me that reading a graphic novel was not really reading. This could not be further from the truth. Kids need to be encouraged to read a variety of material.
4. Encourage students to read for information
Purpose: The 3rd--5th grade expectation is that students are able to analyze and summarize complex concepts and ideas. Students need repeated practice with this skill for improvement.
5. Set a good example
Purpose: students need the opportunity to see their parents reading often and for a variety of purposes.
