The Jefferson Journal January 24
Attendance is so very important to your child's success
Part of our planning includes monitoring and educating on key points of data within our building. Attendance is one of the most important of those key indicators to our success. This research shows just how dramatic an impact attendance has on early reading proficiency . We are celebrating our 92.68% full day attendance rate to this point in the school year. As a parent myself I know how hard it can be to get everyone out the door on time everyday. Thank you for what you do to help and support us here at Thomas Jefferson everyday. -Mr. Johnson

WSD Medication Policy
The Wausau School District has a medication policy that is in place to keep students safe. The purpose of medication administration at school is to provide essential medications so students can attend school and benefit from educational programming.
Here are a few things every parent should know:
● Medications must be brought to school by the parent/guardian in the original container or labeled pharmacy bottle. NO MEDICATIONS IN BAGGIES!
● School staff may not administer narcotic pain medication.
● Prescription medications require a practitioner signature.
● Students with permission may self carry and self administer inhalers, epi-pens or insulin. Contact your school nurse to make these arrangements.
● Over the counter (OTC) medications require a medication consent form, but do not require a physician’s signature.
● OTC medication not FDA approved, like essential oils or herbal supplements should be given at home. Essential oils are not allowed in the classrooms.
● School health offices can assist with faxing consent forms to practitioners to get required signatures.
For any questions, please contact your school’s nurse

Raptor Visitor Management System
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Wausau School District is pleased to announce that we will begin using the Raptor Visitor Management System in all of our schools to strengthen the District’s safety and security protocols. A component of keeping students and staff safe is knowing precisely who is in our schools at all times. The Raptor system will allow us to more closely track visitors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools.
Upon entering a District school, visitors will be asked to present a valid state-issued ID, which will be checked against a national sex offender database to ensure that registered sex offenders are not entering our buildings. The Raptor system only checks the visitor's name and date of birth for comparison with a national database of registered sex offenders. No other data from the ID is gathered or recorded. The system is not connected to any other database and information is not shared with any outside agency.
Once the visitor’s entry is approved, a badge will be issued that identifies the name of the visitor, the date and time, and the purpose of the visit. Children who do not have a valid ID may be allowed to visit as long as they are accompanied by an adult who has completed the check-in process and has been issued a badge. Regular volunteers and all contractors or subcontractors will be subject to the same procedure as visitors at all times. If the visitor’s identity cannot be verified through an acceptable form of identification, the visitor will not be allowed to proceed past the office area. The Raptor system does not replace our current volunteer process.
A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools to simply pick up or drop off an item in the office. A badge is also not necessary for those who are picking up their child from the office as long as they are not going into the school building.
The Raptor Visitor Management System and process will only be used during school hours. Attendees at after-hours events such as performances, ceremonies, or academic/athletic competitions will not be required to complete the process.
This new system was piloted and tested beginning in September at both South Mountain Elementary School and Wausau East High School. The testing process has been smooth and all schools will begin utilizing the new system on January 2, immediately following Winter Break. Signage will also be placed in school parking lots to remind visitors to bring and present a valid state-issued ID prior to entering the building.
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. The Raptor Visitor Management System and process will help us ensure that people who may present a danger are kept away from our students and staff. Thank you, in advance, for supporting our strengthened safety and security protocols in the Wausau School District.
Sincerely,
Angela Lloyd, Director of Pupil Services
