Making Reading Fun Over the Winter Break
“Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” ~ Emilie Buchwald, author
We hope that over winter break you have time to snuggle up and enjoy a cozy winter story together. Here are some suggestions for some great winter-themed reading times:
- Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
- The Biggest, Best Snowman by Margery Cuyler
- The Mitten by Jim Aylesworth
- Snow by Cynthia Rylant
- The Snow Day by Komako Sakai
- Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner
- The Snowy Day by Jack Ezra Keats
Magazines That are Popular for Children
If you are still looking for gift suggestions for the young ones in your family, consider a children's magazine subscription. Kids love to get mail and getting their own magazine often excites them to read. Many families take trips during the holidays and often the magazines have activities to keep little ones busy. Here are some suggestions:
- Ask – for ages 6-9 by Cricket Media, for those interested in arts and science
- Brainspace – for ages 9-12 by Brainspace Publishing. This magazine is both digital and traditional.
- Chickadee – for ages 6-9 by Owlkids, includes games, activities and stories for new readers.
- National Geographic Kids – by National Geographic Society for ages 6-9, includes stories, games and activities about wild animals and exciting places.
Literacy App of the Month - Word Bingo
Since children (and adults) learn through play, it is important to find fun ways to practice sight words. Beyond this app, some other ideas are writing sight words with chalk on the driveway, painting sight words with finger paint or paint brushes, and using play doh to make letters for the sight words.
And when time doesn't allow for that, you may want to try this app! Check out the video below.
