Reading
After finishing the first semester of reading called, Meet the Superkids, we have moved into the next semester called, Superkids' Club. In the first few lessons, not only are we focusing on the letters b and r, we are learning more about the Superkids and what they do together in their neighborhood. The unit begins with the Superkids searching for a better place to meet. They want to form a club and have a place to meet to share and play together. After asking many community members if they had any place for them to meet, the Superkids talked to Gus and Gert (Golly's owners that work at the Gas Station). They suggested that the Superkids clean up the old bus and use it as a club. We learned a new memory word, of, and learned about making plural words by adding -s to the end of some words.
Math
In math, we are continuing our unit on comparing and measuring. We started by focusing on various attributes that we have. I put students in different groups, and they needed to figure out how I sorted them (height, hair color, eye color, clothes, etc). Then, we took out the attribute shapes. As a group, students needed to use these shapes to group in various ways. I started by having them sort by color, then shape, then size, then thickness. At the end, we even sorted by 2 attributes (size and shape) before we cleaned up!
Writing
This week, we are focusing on writing sentences more consistently. I showed a picture and students could write any sentence that came to mind. It could have been a question, an observation, a statement, an exclamation. They were encouraged to write whatever came to mind. What would you write if you saw this picture?
