Weekly Wellness
Compassion for ourselves, as well as others, helps us deal with the interpersonal challenges we face on a daily basis. Perspective allows us to recognize the complexity of a situation. Perspective allows us to empathize with others, see the long view, extricate ourselves from the drama of a moment, and identify a wider range of responses to an event. Think of compassion as a muscle that we all have, that we are born with and need to strengthen. Just like weak muscles may cause our body to hurt, our emotional body experiences pain when one skill set is weakened or has been neglected. Cultivating compassion is like taking a really good multivitamin: It addresses many needs, prevents problems, repairs systemic imbalances, and makes you stronger. Compassion is empathy in action and is good for your body. When we are compassionate, our heart rate slows, our stress hormones decrease, and our immune response strengthens. Compassion can reduce the risk of heart disease and possibly other diseases. It is literally preventative medicine. Neurologists find that when thoughts are directed toward others in compassionate ways, people’s minds wander less to what has gone wrong in their lives or what might go wrong in the future. Compassion for others must begin with self-compassion. You cannot have compassion for others if you do not have it for yourself. You cannot show compassion in the face of someone’s suffering, or show love and care for others without extending that to yourself.
Practicing mindfulness, breathing activities and meditation can help strengthen your compassion. Check out the “Loving Kindness” and “Cultivating Compassion for Difficult People guided meditations at https://www.onwardthebook.com/meditations/ .
