Theology Intensive Studies will now receive Honors credit!

Beginning the 2019-20 school year, Theology 4 Intensive Studies (Theo4IS) will be considered an HONORS level course (Theo4IS-H).

What does this mean for my student (class of 2020)?

  • If your student is already signed up to take the Theo4IS class and wants to stay in it as an honors course, no action is needed.

  • If your student is signed up to take Theo4IS, but now that it is Honors, does not want to take it, please have your student contact the Guidance office and s/he can change to Theo4SJ instead. There will be NO course change fee.

  • If your student was recommended to take Theo4IS but registered for regular Theo4SJ... but now that Theo4IS is honors, your student does want to take it, please have your student contact the Guidance office to change to Theo4IS-H. There will be NO course change fee.

Students have also been emailed directly about this opportunity.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the Guidance office for more information.

Marian Transitions to a Two Semester Calendar

Beginning the 2019-20 school year, Marian Central Catholic High School will be eliminating quarter exams and will be working on a semester calendar. The Marian Central administration and faculty have determined that this transition will be beneficial for our students because it will allow for longer instructional exposure, leading to a better quality of instruction. By eliminating one examination week per semester, there is an increase in instructional time, allowing each course the autonomy to engage students and assess their progress in a more natural way based on the course’s specific curriculum outcomes. In addition, almost 75% of colleges use semester calendars which, because Marian Central is a college preparatory school, makes sense that the students begin to have a college-type experience while still in high school.

So, what does this mean for your student’s progress reporting? Although both parents and students have continuous access to student progress daily through the online portal, we are still anticipating providing progress reports midway through each semester. Since there will no longer be two separate quarter grades, student semester grades will now be based on the following calculation: Semester grade 80% and Semester Exam 20%.

Attention all Seniors: SUPERLATIVE VOTING ENDS SOON!

Class of 2019 Senior Superlatives must be completed by 11:59pm Tuesday, April 9th, 2019. The Surveys are on their English teacher's Google classrooms.

This is a wonderful annual tradition to vote for "Most Likely To" and "Best Of" for our Graduating Seniors!

DESIGNATED HALL PASS Implemented for Rest of School Year

Spring-Fever is starting to set in throughout our student-population! As the weather warms up, the kids get antsy. Unfortunately, this also means there is an increase in vandalism and hall-wandering.

To help protect our property and reduce opportunities for our students to get into trouble - we have asked our teachers to implement a DESIGNATED HALL PASS requirement (as outlined in the Student Handbook).

Here's what that entails -

Students MAY go to the bathroom or leave the classroom - however, the following guidelines must be followed-

  • a designated hall pass must be generated by the instructor (yellow hall pass) with the student's name, destination, the date, time, and must be written in ink.
  • teachers are encouraged to utilize a sign-in/sign-out sheets in their classroom.
  • One student out of the classroom at a time.

IF a student has a MEDICAL PASS issued by the office from the beginning of the year (with medical documentation) to use the bathroom without notice, those will always be honored without question or additional hall pass issuance.

Thank you for your support and understanding as we help keep our students focused and our facilities safe and clean!

FRESHMEN & SOPHOMORE PARENTS: We Need Your Help With PROM!

Because our Juniors and Seniors aren't TOO KEEN to have their parents attend prom, we rely on our Freshmen and Sophomore parents to volunteer to work the event! It's a wonderful way to get a glimpse of the glamour in your student's future - but most importantly, it makes the evening so special for our students. We have raffle tables, a quieter card-playing area, and a photo booth that we offer our students. It's also wonderful to hang out with all the faculty who dedicate their evening to chaperone the event!

If you are available to help work this event (April 26th) we would love to hear from you!

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR QUARTER 3 ACADEMIC HONORS!

College Counselor's Corner: Advice and Resources for Junior Parents!

As our seniors are making their final college choices, our juniors are in the “shopping” phase of their college searches. Here’s some advice and a nifty list of resources I’d like to share with our juniors and their parents as they move from full impulse to warp speed in the college search…

  1. This process needs to be owned by the student. The student's actions will tell you where they are best suited for college. If they are organized, efficient and concerned about the process, they would be likely happy and successful wherever they go.
  2. Get off the selectivity train. Because a college is harder to get into does not make it "better" in any definition of the word: better at delivering an education or better as a match for you. It is one of many criteria one should use in choosing a college, with none having primacy over the others.
  3. Commit to speaking about college only one night a week. Sit down with an agenda, check off what needs to be done and work out a plan that everyone agrees to as what needs to be done between that date and the next week..
  4. Use tools. Use SCOIR, including the college search tool and the interest inventory provided by YouScience. Go to www.niche.com to see some subjective reviews of colleges you’re interested in to see what students have to say about it.

Here are some additional resources you can tap into…

But, most of all, use your college counselor (Yours Truly!) and the Guidance staff to assist you. I’m very proud of the outstanding counseling staff we have here at Marian Central to serve you!

A NOTE ABOUT PROM PHOTOS!

This year, DeWane Studio will be on hand AT THE PROMENADE from 4:30 pm - 5:35 pm taking formal portraits of our students! In the past, we have enjoyed DeWane photography AT the prom venue, but this year we are changing it up for a very good reason! We are thrilled to share that Mr. Jim DeWane (a proud MC Alum!) will be attending his son's wedding rehearsal and dinner the night of our Prom - so it turns out, he will find himself on the other side of the camera for a change! Marian Central is thrilled to extend our congratulations to Mr. DeWane's family as they celebrate this wonderful occasion!
