ALPINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS
JANUARY 2020
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I’d like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! It is hard to believe the Holiday Recess has come and gone. It is nice to see that the staff and students are excited to be back to work at Alpine Elementary School.
With the start of the new year we look forward to several events. Please take the time to review the list of events in this newsletter.
I’d also like to thank everyone who has supported our PTO this year. The donations collected and the successful fund raisers have provided us with opportunities to create many special memories for our students. A special thanks to our PTO Executive Board members, Mrs. Niamh Grano, Mrs. Megan Spiro, Mrs. Jennifer Carlson, Kate Fedge and Staci Schmid.

GUIDANCE
CHARACTER EDUCATION - CITIZENSHIP
This month we will focus on the Character Education trait Citizenship. If you are a good citizen, you work really hard to be a good member of your community. Good citizens care about our country and our neighbors. They follow rules and laws. They take care of the world around them and try really hard to do what is right.
Omegaman visited our school on January 6th to talk to the students about being A H.E.R.O (Helping Everyone Respect Others). He uses superheroes in his assembly to help teach the students about respect! Please have the students wear their favorite superhero shirt or costume to school this day to help build the excitement!

FUN IN STEP
DECEMBER STEP NEWS
December was a short month but we focused mostly on coding in STEP. We celebrated Computer Science Education Week with both STEP and Media classes. We combined our classes together giving us more than a full hour to code.
This year, we chose a brand new app for the students called Code Karts. Thank you to the Alpine PTO for purchasing the app and allowing us to have students working on 25 iPads during the event! The students spent an hour coding in the library and received certificates for their hard work and completion of what we call “Drop Everything and Code Week”. Although the snowstorms and school closing make the celebration a bit more difficult than planned, we were still able to get all of the classes to participate in the event.
I am looking forward to another great year in 2020! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and enjoy some time at home with family and friends.
I’ll see you all in the new year with some fun and enriching new activities in STEP class!
Mrs. Christina Morrow, STEP Teacher
ESPANOL
HOLA
Hola!
Spanish class is off to a great start this year. Students have been working on learning colors, numbers and useful phrases through different authentic and cultural activities. We’ve learned different greetings and words for good-byes. We’ve also been working on using our manners in Spanish like saying gracias, de nada, por favor and salud. Students should be pro’s at answering the question “Cómo te llamas” and “Cómo estás”.I am looking forward to many fun activities coming up this school year like the S.T.E.A.M. Olympics and the first grade Spanish family fun night. My hope is that students develop a love for learning language that they will carry with them through the years here in Sparta schools! Please visit my school website for monthly updates on all things Spanish here at Alpine Elementary School. Gracias!
Baby it’s </CODE> outside! Take a look at our STEP/Spanish bulletin board! 1st and 2nd grade students made these beautiful snowflakes that represent different Spanish speaking countries to create this fun display!

PTO NEWS
Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful time with family and friends during the holiday season.
The PTO has been busy planning the schools biggest fundraiser, Alpine’s Play N’ Win! Class parents, if you haven’t already, please start assembling your class baskets. You should have received an email with dates/times for you to drop your baskets off. We are getting really excited to see them all! Also, if anyone has a private business or works for a company that would be interested in being a sponsor or donating to the Play N’ Win please contact Kristy Pinand or Amanda Tomasello at alpinetrickytray@gmail.com.
This month the PTO will be trying something new! We will be having the Souper Bowl Food Drive from January 27 through January 31. Send a can(s) of soup with your child and they can place it by the team name they think will win Super Bowl. Not only are students deciding who they think the winning team will be, but they are also helping our local food pantry!
The first PTO meeting for 2019 will be on Thursday, January 9, at 10:30am.
Other dates to mark on your calendar:
· 1st Grade Family Fun Night: February 19
· Scholastic Book Fair: February 19-26
· Love of Reading Week Kick-off: February 28
Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year!
