Illinois Bicentennial Monday, Dec. 3rd

We will celebrate Illinois' Bicentennial on Monday with some classroom activities. We encourage all students and staff to wear something related to our state on Monday, December 3rd. For further ideas, check out the Illinois Bicentennial site below.

Band and Orchestra Concert

Our 4th and 5th grade band and orchestra students will have their first concert of the year on Thursday, December 6th beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Ridgeview gym. Students should arrive no later than 6:15 p.m. that evening and the performance will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. Our Ridgeview students join our Dunlap Grade School friends for our band and orchestra concerts. We look forward to their first performance of the year!

Outdoor Recess Information

As stated in the elementary handbook since recess usually will be held outdoors, students must dress appropriately for these play periods. As a rule, students will go outside for recess when the temperature is 15 degrees or above (this includes wind chill temperatures). We also look at the conditions on the playground when making decisions. Students must have snow boots and snow pants to play in the snow. If not, students must remain on the blacktop. Decisions are typically made mid mornings.

Morning Traffic Pattern

Please remember to park in the front parking lot or the side parking lot of the school and walk your child across the lot to the front sidewalk to ensure a safe arrival to school. The lane in front of the school is a bus drop off and pick up lane only. When picking your child up at the end of the day, please follow the same procedures. Park in either the front or side parking lot and walk up to the front doors of the school to pick up your child. Students may not be dropped off before 7:25 a.m. Thank you for helping us ensure safety for all students.

Ridgeview Parents Night

I would like to thank all of our families who attended the BIST / Internet Safety presentations in October. The BIST model is focused on addressing disruptive or otherwise problematic behaviors through grace and accountability. We are planning for another BIST parent night on Thursday, January 17 at 6:00 p.m. We will provide further details as this date draws closer.

5K Smile Train Fund Raising Event

Mrs. Kuethe's class has been hard at work decorating school supplies and creating items such as slime, stress balls, origami and hats; which will be available for purchase during the Smile Train Fund Raising Event. This event will take place on Thursday, December 20th from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. All proceeds will go to Smile Train, to benefit children born with cleft lip and/or cleft palate.

Winter Class Parties

Winter Class parties will take place on Friday, December 21st at 1:00pm unless another time has been communicated by your child’s teacher. Winter class parties will conclude by 1:30 on Friday to allow students time to prepare for the 1:45 dismissal.

When to Keep Your Child Home From School

FEVER-A temperature of 100 or over is a sure sign to keep your child home. The child must be 24 hours fever free without fever reducing medication before returning to school. Giving a fever reducer and sending them to school will almost guarantee a call from school when the medicine wears off, as well as exposing other students to your child’s illness.

VOMITING/DIARRHEA-If your child has been vomiting or having diarrhea during the previous evening, please keep them home. Consult your doctor if symptoms continue more than 48 hours or worsen instead of improving.

CONTAGIOUS DISEASE-If your child is diagnosed with a contagious disease, such as strep, impetigo or pink eye they should be on prescribed antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school.

RASH- A rash is a characteristic symptom of infectious diseases. If your child has a rapidly spreading rash or any rash with fever, signs of other illness or behavioral change they need to be evaluated by a physician.

NASAL DISCHARGE/COUGH-Keep your child home if they have heavy nasal congestion and/or frequent cough. They probably feel miserable and will not be focused on school work, as well as sharing their illness with others.

RED, RUNNY EYES-If your child has crusty, red or weepy eyes with thick or sticky eye drainage please keep home until evaluated by a medical provider. Prescription medication may be needed depending on the diagnosis.

LICE-We have a “No Live Lice” policy. Keep your child home until after the first treatment is administered.

MALAISE-Any illness that prevents your child from participating comfortably in class or school activities.

Student Absences and Student Illness

If your child will need to leave school early due to an appointment or any other reason, please notify both the teacher and the office. Advanced notification will allow the teacher time to prepare for your child’s departure from the class. If your child will not be in attendance due to illness or any other reason, please email your child’s teacher as well as the office. If the office has not received notification of your child’s absence, a call will be placed to parents/guardians to confirm the absence. Any unconfirmed absence will remain unexcused.

Physical Education Excuses

A parent/guardian may excuse a student from physical education for up to two days. Any long term physical education excuse must be requested in writing from the student’s health care provider, specifying the length of time your child is to be exempted. A written note from the health care provider should be submitted for the student to resume full activities. Any child who is exempt from physical education for medical reasons will not be allowed to participate in outdoor recess activities. Re-injury on the playground could occur, resulting in prolonging the child’s healing and recovery period. A student who is excused from PE may read a book on the Fox Bench in the Commons during outdoor recess. Any child who is exempt from physical education for medical reasons will not be permitted to participate in school sponsored sports.

Snow Days

Based off of our recent snow day, our current last day of school will be moved to Friday, May 24. This will also be the SIP day. Please note that if we have additional snow days this year, we will continue to push back the SIP day so that it falls on the last day.
