Algebra I
Algebra I is an accelerated course that covers both the Algebra I and 8th grade standards. This year we will be using a new program called enVision Algebra 1. This program provides students rich opportunities to build understanding of important new mathematical concepts and develop fluency with key skills. Below are the various topics we will cover this year.
Topic 1: Solve Equations and Inequalities
Topic 2: Linear Equations
Topic 3: Linear Functions
Topic 4: Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities
Topic 5: Statistics
Topic 6: Exponents and Exponential Functions
Topic 7: Polynomials and Factoring
Topic 8: Solving Quadratic Equations
Topic 9: Working with Functions
*The 8th grade standards will be interwoven in these topics and various mini units throughout the year.
This year students will also be working on gaining proficiency with the habits of mind and thinking dispositions described in the Standards for Mathematical Practice. In class, students will implement these practices by completing 3 act tasks, application questions that require students to critique & explain, and situations that require them to model and discuss their understanding of key concepts and their applications.
Integrated Algebra
Integrated Algebra is off and running with the study of the exponent laws! One of the big questions we are tackling is ‘how does this apply to my real life?’ We are exploring the applications each day from doubling and tripling to eventually studying scientific notation (which involves really small and really large numbers). Students have adapted to remote learning and are trying to use the different tools, such as Kami, to help annotate a math worksheet on the computer.
As we progress throughout the year, we move into graphing and solving linear equations and functions. We will work through many rigorous real-world applications using a Think-Share-Compare routine to really breakdown the math problems before solving! Later on in the year we tackle geometry and statistics. It is certainly a lot to accomplish but knowing these students from last year will certainly help us get the most out of these incredible young people! Remember, we are still learning all the time with regard to best implement remote learning in mathematics but we are working hard as a team to make sure we all succeed!

Guided Academics Curriculum
During our Guided Academics, students learn a variety of skills. These skills range from Executive Functioning skills like; organization of notebooks, keeping track of assignments, and organization of online folders. We also do skill building in terms of skills needed to be successful in the classroom. The class may dive deeply into questions asked during their academic classes. We also do a variety of study skills. We look at how to be more focused in the classroom, how to take a test without anxiety, as well as how to be successful during virtual classes.
Lastly, as part of the Guided Academics class, the students take part in observing inspirational videos, as well as discussions ranging from a variety of inspirational topics, such as; how to get back up after a failure, how to take pride in one's abilities and work, how to help others be successful. These empathetic kinds of exercises allow young students to become positive members of their classroom, their homes and families, and the community.

Imporant Parent/Guardian Partnerships
Parents/guardians should be helping to manage cell phones and other electronics being used during class time. We’re finding that students are being distracted by cell phones, video games, TVs, and music when they should be focused on class instruction and discussions. Please help us by setting boundaries with your children. Please note that music may be allowed during independent work time at the teacher’s discretion.
As parents/guardians, we really need your help to encourage your children to keep their cameras on during class, especially when asked by the teacher. We’re getting resistance from some and it’s disruptive to the class to have to ask multiple times. We enjoy interacting with students when we see them, and teaching to black boxes with names does not provide us with the important feedback we use to gauge understanding and engagement.

i-Ready Diagnostic
Fall Diagnostic
Since we are in a remote setting, this year students will take the 1st IReady diagnostic virtually! The 8th graders will be the first in the district to complete a diagnostic. The corresponding assessments and dates are listed below.
IReady ELA Diagnostic→ October 19th 2020
IReady Math Diagnostic→ October 20th 2020
It’s important that each student put forth their best effort on these assessments so that teachers have the information they need to best support them. Below are helpful videos and resources that can assist in the implementation of the iReady diagnostic.

"The program aims to reach students and families at Framingham and Milford High Schools starting in 8th grade, by exposing them to in-demand professional fields and career pathways, including business, sociology/criminology, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), and education. In 9th grade, students will begin taking exploratory classes, and hear from scholars about the different fields and what it means to work in them. By 10th grade, students will pick a specialized pathway to pursue and dig deeper into a career track. The money will be used for a variety of efforts needed to get the new initiative off the ground, including curriculum development and alignment, student and family recruitment, and career exploration opportunities."
