Safety Protocols for Visitors
During school hours, doors are not to be propped open. Staff, students, and families are reminded to shut doors behind them. The front office staff have been asked to follow specific procedures before admitting anyone into the building.
We want to remind you of the procedures we follow when visitors come to the school:
- The front door is the only entrance point for all visitors.
- Please ring the doorbell and investigate the camera.
- Be prepared to state your name, your child’s name, and your purpose for visiting.
- All visitors must walk directly to the appointed area with a valid photo ID and sign in.
- A visitor’s sticker will be given to visitors following the above procedures and must be worn and prominently visible.
- Any visitor in the school without a visitor sticker will be escorted directly to the front office by a staff member.
- If you are signing out your child, we also check your ID.
- We also ask that visitors not hold doors open for other visitors.
CHMS Volunteer Policy
The DeKalb County School District is committed to providing equal opportunities to all volunteers. In an effort to protect our students’ safety, DCSD has adopted a volunteer policy that all schools should follow. Volunteers will be categorized as Level I, II, or III. Listed below will give you a description of each Level.
Level I volunteer are non-district personnel who will have no interaction with students and will not encounter students. Volunteers at this level may be people working on playground construction projects or assisting with facilities maintenance when school is not in session. Level I volunteer do not require criminal background checks. Prior to service, Level I volunteer will be required to sign a Volunteer Release Form, which will be kept on file at the school. If it becomes known that Level, I volunteer have prohibited offenses in their history that would exclude them from volunteer service, they will be disqualified from volunteering in any capacity for the DeKalb County School District.
Level II volunteers are non-district personnel who will have supervised interaction with students before, during, or after school. Some examples of Level II volunteers include, but are not limited to, book fair volunteers and classroom volunteers. Registered sex offenders will not be allowed to volunteer. School administrators shall have the discretion to pursue any additional screening methods, including, but not limited to, personal interviews and reference checks of prior volunteer experience.
Level III volunteers must be approved by Public Safety and the local school principal prior to the volunteer participating in activities involving direct, unsupervised interaction with students. Examples of Level III volunteers include chaperones on overnight field trips, chaperones or volunteers for local school events, volunteer tutors, office/media center volunteers, or any other volunteers who will have any unsupervised interaction with students. Level III volunteers shall be fingerprinted by the district and have GBI/FBI criminal background checks on file prior to rendering volunteer services. Registered sex offenders will not be allowed to volunteer. School administrators shall have the discretion to pursue any additional screening methods, including, but not limited to, personal interviews and reference checks.
If you are interested in volunteering, you must complete a brief training with Ms. Garfield, School Social Worker. Please contact Ms. Berry if you are interested.
