The Weekly Jr. Oiler
March 1, 2019
California Distinguished School
This week Dwyer was named a 2019 California Distinguished School. Schools must first be invited to apply and then have a window of time to write an application about the outstanding things that are happening on their campus. A team of staff wrote our application about our new GRIT program and the many changes that have occurred since its inception. We also applied for an Exemplary Arts Distinction, which we will hear about soon.
A team of Dwyer staff will be celebrating at a ceremony in April at the Disneyland Hotel. Way to go, Dwyer! It is certainly great to be a Jr. Oiler!
Students Helping Students
Students in Mrs. Zellmer's Environmental Science class were guest speakers in Mrs. Rasmussen's classes on Tuesday. They shared research about ocean pollution, over-fishing, by-catch, and more to help the students prepare for an essay they are writing in Writer's Workshop.
The Outsiders
7th Graders in Mr. Slutsky and Miss Edison's classes celebrated the reading of their novel The Outsiders. Students were encouraged to dress up like greasers and they had treats in the theme of the book.
Surf Team Success
As the Dwyer Surf Team gears up for their competition season, they have had two successful fundraisers to support their entry fees. Thank you to Dukes and all the families that supported these efforts!
Solar Ovens
Students in Miss Mazzera's class worked on solar ovens to test the ability to use alternate energy. Groups researched designs of solar cookers and made their own. They were put to the test to see whose oven would heat up a piece of cookie dough the most in a 25 minute period.
Scholar Dollars Grant Opportunity
Dwyer has applied to receive a grant from Scholar Dollars in the amount of $25,000. We plan to use this funding to equip our new STEM facility and gymnasium. The recipients are chosen by number of votes, so please help us out. Voting begins March 11 and we will send out a link once the date is near.
Parent Book Series
Please join us on March 7 at 7 PM in the Dwyer library for our first meeting of our Glow Kids parent series. Mrs. Glembocki will lead discussion around the first three chapters, as well as talk about practical applications for our families. This meeting is for parents only please.
District's Annual Survey
Our district annual survey window is coming soon. Please make sure to fill out the survey, as Dwyer uses our results to improve our programs and offerings.
Spirit Wear
Don't forget that Dwyer Spirit Wear is for sale all year long on our website!
