The setting is in China Town, San francisco.
Ni kan, Mother Waverlys, and mr. chong
The mother and daughter differ in opinion about being being a prodigy. Her mother wants Her to to work for something for once so, she pushed her daughter into trying to be some kind of prodigy. Soon her daughter, Ni kan, soon rebels.
Ni kan doesnt want to change who she is just because her mother wants to make her into a prodigy. She wants to do good in her life, but she doesnt want her mother controlling what she does. she doesnt want to sit for hours and do something she dislikes doing.
Ni kan thought her mother was putting to much pressure on her, she decides to rebel against her mother making her mother angry with her. Ni kan refused to try playing, which causes many conflicts
the theme is that even though you have conflicts with a family member, you shouldnt let them get to you, or your whole life or you will end up regretting them in the future.
The piano had symbolism to the daughter after her mother passed away. The piano symbolised when her mother tried to make her do something. In the end that was important to Ni Kan.
8.In the first part of the story there is a scene in which the daughter sees herself in the mirror. What does she see? What thematic significance could this scene have? How does it relate to the title
She sees her face and she realizes she wont be changed, she wont change who she is. The scene makes her change her mind about having her mother try to change her, she decides to give up on her mother. It shows the two sides of Ni kan.
9.Two strong-willed characters are pitted against each other in this story. What went wrong in the relationship between mother and daughter?
The mother and daughter both wanted different things. The mother wanted her daughter to just try at something, but her daughter wanted to be herself and rebel against the mother. When the mother and daughter would fight they would both exchange many negative words torwards eachother.
10.Read carefully the parts dealing with the mother’s earlier life in China. How have her earlier experiences shaped her ambitions for her daughter?
The mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America, she had many hopes once she moved to america things could get better. She kept pushing Ni Kan to be a prodigy considering she believed she could be one.
