The Juliano Journal

Week of May 9-13

Dear Families,

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend Open House last night. It is always so much fun to watch the students get so excited to show you everything they have done this year. I cannot believe this year is winding down so fast- I definitely need to savor these last few weeks with your incredible children.

We have some exciting events as we approach the end of the year. Author's Day this year will be held on Friday, May 27th. West is in need of LOTS of volunteers (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, college-age siblings, etc.) to make the day successful. Volunteers will lead small groups of students throughout the day's activities, including our visiting author's presentation and two breakout sessions. Volunteers are not required to stay for the final session (2:30 pm-3:15 pm). We are asking for a minimum of two parents per class. Groups will be broken into K-1, 2-3, 4-5. If you have more than one child at West, you will be placed with your child in the class you sign up for. If your class volunteers are filled, feel free to sign up in the "additional volunteer" section, and provide the name of your child that you want to be grouped with in the comments section. Here is the link to sign up:

Thanks for considering volunteering!

Have a great weekend! :)

Curriculum News

Language Arts

The past two weeks has been spent discussing figurative language. Students learned that writers use figurative language such as similes, metaphors, personification, and hyperboles to make their writing more exciting, and to give their readers mental images of what they are describing. Students practiced using figurative language to describe pictures they brought in from home. The posters came out great, and the students had so much fun completing this activity! Hopefully you saw the finished projects on your child's desk at Open House.

This week in math we reviewed length. Students practiced measuring to the nearest 1/2 inch and 1/2 centimeter, and learned how to convert between two units of length. We also spent time this week discussing bar graphs and pictographs. Students practiced creating graphs from charts, and using the graphs to answer questions about data.

Social Studies

What a fun week in our study of economics we had! At the beginning of the week students were given $20 in Meerkat money and have been working hard to follow expectations and earn more money to spend at Meerkat Mall at the end of the year.

This week, students found a partner that they wanted to go into business with. Together with their partners, students decided on a product to sell at Meerkat Mall, and conducted a market research survey to decide on a price to sell their product at. Next week we will discuss advertising techniques, and partnerships will create a slogan, jingle, and a symbol for their market. Students will also get to start creating a commercial to advertise their product. It will for sure be a fun time for students!

**There is weekend homework for economics this week! Please be sure your child completes it and brings it back on Monday.**
