Fabulous First Graders

TODAY is the day to learn something NEW!

Reading & Language Workshop

Our first graders continue to build reading stamina and bit by bit, they are reading for longer periods of time. It's amazing to see how much the children have learned in such a short period of time! Our kiddos continue to become more and more independent during our reading block. We wrapped up our first language workshop unit this week (Community) by discussing how each of the books showed the value of community. We also worked on prepositions (on, over, under, behind, etc.) and articles (a/an). Ask your child how they know when to use "a" or "an" in a sentence.

Math Workshop

We are winding down with our Launching Math Workshop unit. The students have been learning the procedures of math workshop and how mathematicians work during this time. We have focused on increasing independence, using graphing skills, and using tally marks. With solid routines and procedures in place, we are excited to see what we can accomplish this year!

Science

We have continued to focus on Earth's place in the universe. Last week, we spent our time learning about the moon and how the moon's movement is related to Earth's movement. This week, we spent time learning more about the sun and we have learned some amazing information about the sun! It's soooo hot and soooo far away! Excitement is building for next week's field trip to the planetarium.

Dreambox at Home

For those families that are new to Rose Glen, we wanted to let you know that your child can access our math app, Dreambox, at home. While it is not considered "homework," we strongly encourage that your child spends some time on the app during the week. For those of you who are not new, there has been a change to how the app operates so we wanted to let you know about that change as well. Each class now has a unique classroom code that your child will type in each time they use the app. They have been doing this in our classrooms the past few weeks so most have gotten really good at doing this. The classroom codes are below and if you click on the Dreambox button, you will get more specific information about accessing Dreambox. The note below has the classroom code for Mrs. Czarnecki's class but all other information is the same. Please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions! Just a reminder that students should be answering questions without assistance from adults or siblings. The program adjusts based on how students are answering questions and if they have help from others, the program becomes too difficult for them and we do not have the ability to bump them back without having them start from the very beginning. This also provides valuable information to the teachers to help with classroom instruction. Thank you for your assistance!

Above is the website for Raz Kids for you to use at home. Raz Kids is a great tool for daily reading minutes. As kids grow as readers the texts get harder and require you to complete quizzes to check on comprehension skills too. Below are log-ins for each homeroom. Let us know if you have any questions.
