‘GROWING GREATNESS GRANDEZA EN CRECIMIENTO'
SOCIAL MEDIA AND CYBERBULLYING
Families, we are asking for your help. We have seen an increase of students creating social media accounts with the sole purpose of posting pictures and comments that target and put down other students. While this is happening outside of school, you can imagine the impact it has on the students who are being targeted when they come to school each day.
Unfortunately, it is easier than ever for kids and teens to bully their peers. In this digital world, bullies can say something harmful without having to see the physical reactions of their victim or visually experience the effects of their words. To understand the injustice more fully, we first have to admit it exists, educate ourselves, and then take actions to prevent and protect the children in our care.
What is Cyberbullying?
Cyberbulling is a form of emotional bullying that takes place entirely online and/or through devices such as phones, computers, and gaming consoles. It is typically meant to humiliate, embarrass, or discourage others by sharing personal or private information, or by degrading another person. Cyberbullying is considered to be unlawful and/or criminal in some states and in some instances; however, cyberbullying is still a major problem. Oftentimes, cyberbullying happens privately through text messages, messaging apps, or email, but many times it plays out on a more public platform such as social media where there is maximum fallout.
Cyberbullying Tactics
To identify cyberbullying, you should understand the tactics used to harm the victims. Many of these you’ll recognize as the digital equivalent of bullying that occurs offline. Some tactics include:
Spreading rumors or making comments aimed to embarrass or cause emotional harm
Using digital means to notify a person of their intent to harm them
Communicating someone’s proposed worthlessness digitally and encouraging them to take their own life
Sharing hurtful or embarrassing content such as images or videos of the victim and mocking them
Pretending to be someone else to gather information about victims
Shaming someone online for their religion, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, etc.
Thank you for taking time to talk with your teen about safe social media usage and the importance of being kind both online and offline, as well as in person.
LEARNING ACROSS BAKER PRAIRIE
BPMS PARTNERS WITH CANBY FIRE DEPARTMENT TO OFFER CPR TO 7TH/8TH GRADERS
BPMS 8th graders received hands only CPR and stop the bleed training on Wednesday, March 1 during Health/PE classes. Next Wednesday, March 8, our 7th graders will receive the same training. Thank you to our Health/PE staff, district nurses and the Canby Fire Department for partnering with us.
BAKER PRAIRIE CARE TEAM
One of our goals as a district is to provide equitable education for all our students and to "eliminate barriers, giving students what they need to succeed." At Baker Prairie, one of the steps we have taken to realize this goal is to assemble our BPMS Care Team. This group of parents, guardians, family members, staff, and other community members works together to meet the needs of Baker Prairie students as they arise throughout the school year.
How does it work? Our student interventionist, Brett Curtis, periodically sends out requests to the Care Team for items such as snacks, clothing, bedding, and school supplies. Team members reply if they are able to provide a new or gently used item to meet this request. Last year over 50 students benefited from the Care Team's support and generosity. If you are interested in joining, please contact Brett Curtis at brett.curtis@canby.k12.or.us.
STUDENT LOCKER / LOST AND FOUND
Please have your student check their locker and the LOST and FOUND and bring home their belongs.
DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM INFORMATION NIGHT
Families with incoming kindergarten students, there will be a Dual Language Immersion Information Session located at Trost Elementary School on Monday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m. (English) and 6:30 p.m. (Spanish). Please attend to find out more about our Dual Language Immersion program at Trost, which is open to all families in our district and provides students the opportunity to learn in English and Spanish.
IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT INFORMATION FOR CANBY FAMILIES
Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in Oregon Statewide Assessments. Assessment is an important part of each student’s academic experience. Beginning in kindergarten and through grade 12, learners in the Canby School District experience a variety of formative, interim, and summative assessments. Oregon Statewide Assessments are one example of a summative assessment administered in grades 3 through 8, and grade 11. Students in these grade levels are required to participate in English Language Arts and Math assessments annually. In grades 5 and 8, students also participate in Science. Assessment tasks are tied to grade-level standards and units of study. Each assessment is an opportunity for students to demonstrate cumulative growth and learning over the course of their school experience.
Canby schools begin Oregon Statewide Assessments in March; and Canby School District, like all districts in Oregon, is striving for 95% or greater student participation. This goal is essential for understanding the depth and breadth of learning for student groups across our schools, and for evaluating programs and resources. Oregon Summative Assessment data provides information to the Canby community and to district teams about our successes or strengths and areas for improvement.
Your principal and teachers will be communicating additional information about Oregon Statewide Assessment dates and ways to support your student’s success. Please reach out to your school principal or classroom teacher if you have further questions. Canby School District appreciates your partnership.
When a family chooses to opt-out of OSAS, students will work in a separate location to complete a similar Math, Reading, Writing or Science work sample while OSAS is administered in their class.
