Here's What's Happening At Milan Elementary School
September Students of the Month are Good Listeners!
Milan Elementary School is again privileged to have the support of the Milan American Legion, represented by Mr. Ron Mills and Mrs. Thelma Reese, in our efforts to improve student character through our Student of the Month program. Each month a different desirable character trait is featured and a student is chosen from each class who is considered an outstanding example of that trait.
September’s theme was “Good Listener” and the following students were chosen as those who always listened attentively and politely and so were able to follow directions as given and act appropriately. Congratulations go out to: Kindergarten: Teagan Herald, Eli Reed, Lila Goodpaster, Lily Arthur, Taylor Stock. First Grade: Liberty Ratledge, Jillianne Herd, Kayden Bushhorn, Deegan Gregg. Second Grade: Brionna Thomas, Jayden Graham, Alaina Bennett. Third Grade: Kayla Roell, Alexis Degroot, Lucian Cooper, Hailey Pippin. Fourth Grade: Markiesha Lillard, Serena Cobble, Joshua Fryman, Emersen King. Fifth Grade: Gabriel Jones, Cameron Heinrich, Kirsten Pindell.
Congratulations to these students and their families!
Congratulations Pumpkin Show Princess Madison Finn and Prince Runner-Up Hayden Poole!
CARES Leaders Group Organized
New to MES this year is the CARES Leaders Group that came into being as a result of the corporation-wide leadership and anti-bullying program that was presented to our students and to the community by the STARS Nashville staff.
The Milan C.A.R.E.S. (“Change. Action. Resources. Empowerment. Support.”) team has been developed to encourage, strengthen, and support our students, teachers, and school climate!
These third, fourth, and fifth grade student leaders meet weekly with their sponsor, School Social Worker Mrs. Stephanie Schwing-Stamper. The goal of these leadership meetings and activities is to teach our students about bullying and harassment, how to recognize it, and how to intervene and stand up as leaders against it. In addition, meetings focus on teaching integrity, courage, creative thinking, planning, self-belief, confidence, and responsibility.
Many of the ideas for activities throughout the year will come from the leaders, and they will be responsible for planning and presenting events, fundraisers, and other activities to benefit others and our school.
As their first project, they have begun spreading positive encouragement among students and teachers with their compliment cards and teacher thank-you cards. And, they have shared several situations where they have already begun intervening with bullying. Their unity and strength will grow with each time they take a stand and make a difference.
We are very pleased to have this new group working to make our school a better place to live and learn! And, we thank these students for being willing to put forth their time and effort to keep bullying out of MES: Grace Bruce, Aiden McFarland, Dayton Hess, Cameron Heinrich, Ayden Potts, Allison Doyle, Chloe Hunter, Riley Schwipps, Alexa Fehrman, Kyleigh Bledsoe, Ellie Knecht, Rachel Holt, Kelly Honeycutt, Dylan Thomas, Trenton Langferman, Rilee Pires, Rose Steigerwald, Lucy Riehle, Kate Prifogle, Ethan Gerster, Logan Disbro, Anna Herzog, Emma Rohrig, Landon Weaver, Dakota Seale, Jackson Voss, Markiesha Lillard, Taytum Barker, Landon Saylor, Dylan Offill, Nevaeh Carpenter, Hailey Bushorn, Emma Voss, Ethan Clark, Wyatt Marsh, Avah Rapier, Kynadee Bode, Clayton Hunter, Aspyn Wehmeyer, Grace Bedel, Micah Norman, Brady Alcorn, Kayla Roell, Ruby Brown, Dalton Phillips, Macey Hanson.

We would also like to thank local businesses Merrilee's Trustworthy Supply and Momma Milano's for their donations toward our raffle! Our families benefited from this show of community support and are appreciative that local business owners take an interest in our students and families. Together, we lead!
5th Grade Chieftains are Named
The Chieftains are a group of fifth grade students who are selected through an application process to help lead activities at school. These students meet once a week with School Counselor Mrs. Brenda Schwering during their lunch and recess time. Together they work to plan student activities to make MES an even better place to learn and have fun.
This year's Chieftains include: Caden Baker, Jaleigh Haffey, Ava Honnert, Mason Johnson, Ellana Jutzi, Emma Jutzi, Margot Keller, Collin O’Brien, Alyssa Phelps, Makalee Rivera, Grady Sinclair, and Kayla Walke.

Volunteers Needed for our TLC Program
Our TLC (Tender Loving Care) program is looking for adult volunteers to help students by offering additional support. The adult mentor may read to a child, listen to them read aloud, help with other school work, and so on. You do not have to have a child or grandchild in our school to volunteer to give support to a child. Past volunteers have also included retired senior citizens, members of the local clergy, and former teachers. The only qualification is the desire to help a child so please help us spread the word.
If you, or someone you know, would be interested in learning more about how you could make a difference in the life of a Milan Elementary student by volunteering, please contact Mrs. Schwering, school counselor at 812-654-2922 or e-mail at brenda.schwering@milan.k12.in.us
Parents, just a few friendly financial reminders:
- Please keep an eye on your child's lunch account balance and make sure to deposit enough funds to cover all meals, extras, etc. so the account isn't overdrawn. If the account does become overdrawn, your child may not purchase extras and we are only permitted to serve a regular meal for one day before we must serve a substitute meal.
- If you signed your child up to receive the weekly fluoride treatment, the charge is $5.00 for those who can pay. Please send either cash or check payable to Milan Elementary.
- And finally, the contribution for each child for the Fall Party is $1.00. Since there will be another $1.00 due soon for the Winter Party in December, we suggest you send $2.00 with your child now and have that chore all taken care of.
Our sincere thank you for your prompt attention to these matters.
