Black History Month
National Black History Month is a time to celebrate and commemorate the roles African Americans have made in the history of our country; and to also acknowledge that African Americans have contributed economically, culturally, and socially to the development of United States history.
Westlake Elementary is committed to honoring and valuing the legacy, experiences, and contributions of African Americans, not just during February but yearlong.
This week we will be focusing on famous inventors including George Washington Carver and Lonnie Johnson.

CVUSD Buddy Program
Beginning Monday February 1st, CVUSD will launch the Buddy Program, which was conceptualized by two high school students, to provide social-emotional opportunities for our students identified with a disability in grades K-12. Similar to our Online Tutoring program, the Buddy Program will connect students across the district using the online booking system to set up online Zoom sessions. However, these sessions will support students with social connections, rather than have an academic focus.
High School student volunteers will be paired with students who have a disability and provide a thirty (30) minute Zoom session that may include online games, fun activities, or just to engage in conversations. Please note that this is for CVUSD students only and families will be able to book up to two appointments per student, per week. We need your assistance in getting the word out. Please use the various modes of communication to inform your families of this service. The following information will be important for our families to engage in the Buddy Program.
To schedule an appointment, parents or guardians will:
After reviewing the student biographies and viewing student volunteer headshots, click on the “Book Now” button and follow the prompts to select the date and time of your appointment and your CVUSD Buddy.
A student volunteer buddy will reach out to you at the email you provide with a Zoom link for your appointment.
We do ask that an adult is in the room nearby during the Zoom session. We’re so grateful that our high school students are giving so much of their time to give back to the community. We encourage families to take advantage of this special opportunity.
TUTORING HELP
CVUSD Tutoring
As you may recall, last spring CVUSD launched a tutoring/connection program for elementary students. This year, we are expanding the program to include both elementary and middle school students. A number of our high school students have generously offered to volunteer their time to offer free 30-45 minute virtual tutoring and support appointments for our students.
To schedule an appointment, parents or guardians will:
- Go to: https://conejousd.org/CVUSD-Student-Tutors and enter the following username and password:
- Username: cvusd
- Password: theconejoway
- After reviewing the tutor biographies and headshots, click on the “Book Now” button and follow the prompts to select the date and time of your appointment and your CVUSD tutor.
- A student tutor will reach out to you at the email you provide with a Zoom link for your appointment.
TO Library Homework Help
Virtual Homework Center is a program for elementary & middle-school students. It is free to participate in the program, thanks to the generous support of volunteers. The program pairs a Volunteer tutor with a student in grades K - 8th. A parent or guardian must be present during the Zoom session.
Virtual Homework Center
Mondays 3:00 pm to 5:00pm
Wednesdays 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Thursdays 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
*Closed all CVUSD holidays/breaks.
