Traffic and Parking at JBD
The purpose of this letter is to remind parents and guardians of the parking and drop-off challenges we are facing at John B. Dey at this time. As you may be aware, parking is limited. We have over 100 staff members and just about 95 parking spaces. In the morning, it has been observed that parents are sitting in their cars, in spaces, on their phones, while teachers are riding around trying to park to get started for the day. Please utilize the ‘Kiss and Go’ mantra, and go through the drop-off line if you are bringing your students to school. When you arrive early in the drop-off line, please pull all the way to the front of the loop to accommodate other vehicles that are coming from behind. We are currently working on signage for this area.
Along with that concern, we have parents dropping off students at the far end close to Great Neck Middle, causing the children to walk in the mud and through construction debris. Please do not drop your child off until you reach the John B. Dey sidewalk where a staff member is visible. Dropping off out of site is extremely dangerous, and we are concerned for the safety of these children.
Tuesday morning, we had 25 students come in to the building around 8:12-8:20. These students were dropped off at the front door. Students are tardy after 8:10, and when the staff is not visible out front, parents need to exit their vehicles and escort their children into the school to sign them in. We truly appreciate your cooperation with this matter. Please keep in mind that students are set up for success when they are ready and settled in their classrooms prior to 8:10 a.m. As a courtesy to parents, we have an early drop-off at 7:30 a.m. and students are supervised in the cafeteria until dismissed to class at 7:50 a.m. Along with the drop-off procedures, no students are to be dropped off on the Thomas Bishop side of the building at all.
One final concern is parking during the school day. There are spots at the end of the driveway near the old front door and a few extra spaces here and there. Please do not park in spots that are marked for specific staff members or marked ‘Reserved’. We have also noticed people parking in the back of the cafeteria where the delivery trucks need access. The spots in that location are reserved for our cafeteria personnel and our custodians.
Your cooperation is appreciated. We apologize for the inconvenience our growing pains are causing in regards to traffic and parking. An occupied modernization is a challenge and even through it is not easy, it will be worth it.

Congratulations to our Safety Patrols of the Month for January and February
January Patrol of the Month
Byron Dillman was selected as the Safety Patrol of the Month-January. Staff members praised Byron for his diligence when working in the bus loop. He “does everything that is asked of him” and he “notices when signs are not being held and makes sure to hold signs until his bus comes. Byron does not leave his post when Mr. K calls ‘patrols!’ when he knows his bus will be late.”
