Life after High School: Student Field Trips
The Barber School of Pittsburgh
Triangle Tech
7 young men visited and toured Triangle Tech. The students received information on Computer Aided Drafting, Design, and 3-D Printing, HVAC, Welding, Electrical, and Carpentry. Because our students represented the New Academy Charter so well, they were all invited to take part in the Triangle Tech shadowing program, which allows them to follow a student schedule within their program of interest. So far, 2 or the students have taken advantage of this invitation, with 1 planning on enrolling for the summer.
Classroom Highlights
The STEAM students have been working on a unit about urban sustainability. The final project was for them to build tiny houses with sustainable systems.
This student's tiny house includes solar panels that will create enough electricity to run a television and lights. It also includes a swimming pool which uses gray water.

Toys For Tots
New Academy Charter School students worked very hard and had a lot of fun volunteering at the Toys for Tots warehouse. They helped nonprofit organizations fill their vehicles with toy orders and carried in/sorted donated toys. The whole day was filled with a lot of walking, carrying, and laughing! After the project, the students enjoyed a nice pizza lunch.
Corporate Volunteers at New Academy Charter School
Employees from BNY Mellon continue to support our efforts to make our school environment a great place for students. Recently, Mellon volunteers cleaned out a room next to our gymnasium and reorganized our school uniforms in our school store. Weeks later more Mellon volunteers came to the Academy to paint the room that was cleaned out. And more recently, we had another group of Mellon volunteers assemble fitness equipment such as a workout bench, treadmill, and more. One volunteer in particular went above and beyond. Doug Clegg has volunteered with us several times. Each time he comes to volunteer he is always so pleasant and does such great work. You can really tell that he cares deeply about others. However, the most recent time that Doug volunteered with us he brought a piece of drywall, wood boards and all of the tools and materials needed to fix one of the walls in the fitness room. We are so very grateful for Doug and the many volunteers that have helped us transform our building into a great learning space for our students!
