Reminder to take the 2019-2021 District Calendar Survey
The Beaverton School District staff and community are invited to assist with the selection of the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 District calendars by selecting their preferred calendar option for each of the two years. The survey will be open through October 14, 2018. The final calendars will be announced and posted on the District’s website following the October 22, 2018 School Board meeting. Key differences are outlined below.

Staff Spotlight: Regina Petersen, Paraeducator
You might say Regina Petersen’s heart is in Hazeldale Elementary School. She has lived in the community for 28 years, and worked at the school for 25 of those years. “It’s changed over the years, but it’s always been a good, fun community,” says Regina.
In her tenure at Hazeldale, she’s worked for five different principals. In addition to helping children with reading intervention, Regina also supervises all the lunch periods, is a crossing guard in the morning and does bus duty in the afternoons.
She also helps as a scorekeeper at Aloha High School basketball and volleyball games, remembering how she sat in the stands years ago watching her own children play. Regina enjoys keeping that connection with former Hazeldale students. “It’s so fun seeing them again and seeing the families,” says Regina. She remembers students long after they’ve left the halls of Hazeldale, recently attending a former student’s wedding. “There’s always been a few that get into my heart,” she says.
“At school events, when the older kids return to visit, they ask about her without exception,” says Hazeldale teacher Amy Corris.“Regina is nothing short of remarkable in her work ethic and most of all, in her love for students, especially the underdogs. She goes way beyond the call of duty, both in school and out. She works quietly and diligently behind the scenes in many unexpected ways. She mends backpacks and jackets; she finds extra mittens and hats when they are needed.”
Regina’s connection to the community is strong. She gets choked up when she talks about the demolition of the old Hazeldale building. “The tearing down of the old school took a piece of my heart.” Students and staff spent the last school year in a temporary building across town, which was a challenge for Regina, who lives within walking distance of Hazeldale. “I told myself I can do anything for ten months, but I am glad to be back here.”

Wednesday October 10 is International Walk + Bike to School Day. And 19 schools have signed up so far. Check to see if your school is registered here and join students and adults around the world to celebrate the benefits of being active while getting to school.
International Walk + Bike to School Day promotes walking and rolling. It’s great for our kids and it’s great for the community. Why?
- More walking, biking and taking the bus will reduce traffic congestion near schools.
- Less traffic congestion means increased community traffic safety.
- More walking and rolling means increased physical activity.
- It’s FUN!!
Mark your calendars and get ready to walk or roll to school on October 10.
Beaverton Education Foundation Phone-a-thon – OCTOBER 9-17!
Between October 9-17, hundreds of Beaverton-area high school students and community volunteers will telephone Beaverton residents during the Beaverton Education Foundation’s 20th annual Phone-a-thon, requesting donations to fund critical classroom, after-school, and summer programs across our District.
Last school year, Beaverton Education Foundation’s 3,000 donors helped fund 96 programs and activities that reached 22,261 students at all 53 schools. Our goal this year is to fund 130 projects and reach 30,000 students at all 53 schools, in honor of our 30th anniversary supporting inspiration, innovation and success in Beaverton schools. Your financial support of BEF is vital and ensures that thousands of students benefit from these important hands-on projects and programs.
Costs of our phone-a-thon are underwritten by our generous sponsors, so that your tax-deductible donation can help more Beaverton kids. BEF thanks you for your support.

Beaverton City Library Hosts “Make Every Day a Reading Day” Workshop Series
This fall, Beaverton City Library will host the workshop series “Make Every Day a Reading Day.” Taking place at the Murray Scholls branch in October and at the main library in November, the workshops will teach parents and caregivers the skills children need to build a strong foundation for future school readiness and learning to read.
Each workshop will focus on a different readiness practice—talking, singing, reading, writing, playing, math and science—and will include stories, songs, activities and take-home tips. While the workshops are adult-focused, they are designed to be fun for kids. Children will receive one free book per workshop.
