Having seizures is hard for many different reasons. It makes us vulnerable, it may put us at risk of injury and it can mean we lose big chunks of time. So, in about two-thirds of us, epilepsy medicines are a real help in reducing or stopping seizures.
But like with any medicine, there can be another aspect to taking these – side-effects. Side-effects won’t necessarily happen. Or if they do, they won’t necessarily be very severe or there permanently. But on some occasions, they can be a challenge to cope with. You may not even realize they are happening, or worse – it may make you feel like you don’t want to take your medicines, which can be dangerous.
You may remember reading in previous issues of Epilepsy Today people’s stories which mentioned their challenges with medicine side-effects. In the December 2016 issue, you may have seen the story by Colin Grant, who wrote a book about his brother Christopher. In this story, he mentioned that his brother was “on again, off again” with his medicine because he didn’t like how it made him feel. It helped with his seizures, but he felt dulled by his medicine, and worried it was making him gain weight. But it is very risky to stop your medicines or change their dose on your own. It can worsen seizures or cause a breakthrough seizure.

Shannon was diagnosed at 3 years with epilepsy, speech apraxia and static encephalopathy. Before the diagnoses, Shannon had over 50 seizures a day and never laughed or been present, mentally. Now she laughs, plays with toys and is learning to say words. She still can not identify people but, SHE CAN say about 10 words if prompted, recognize her father by name and do sign language for basic things. Shannon has been through a lot but uses her story to motivate other children. Her book, from The Sister Keepers book series (trademarked), A Sister with A Disability is A Sister with a Superpower, talks about the importance of embracing who you are and believing in YOU. It also opens the conversation for what it means to be a child dealing with the stigmas tied to having a disability. Children from different cultures, sex, and religions are included in this heartwarming book. She is signing for "more" in her book. It is a symbol that she still wants more out of life because she has more to offer others around her!

An epileptic cop is suing over her ouster — claiming she was discriminated against for her neurological disorder.
Jessica Agosto, 40, joined the NYPD in July 2001 and had an “exemplary” career until she suffered her first seizure in July 2013, according to her Manhattan Supreme Court suit.
She went on medication that fully controlled her seizures, but superiors still took her badge and gun and relegated her to desk duty, she says in court papers.
