MHS Band Weekly Update
Sunday, October 15, 2022
Upcoming Schedule
Monday, October 17 - Evening Rehearsal - 6:30p - 9:00p
Friday, October 21 - Home Football Game - Senior Show
Thursday, October 27 - OPTIONAL trip to MSU (see below for info)
Senior Show - Friday, October 21
If you are a parent of a Senior band student, please plan on attending the game on 10/21. Senior parents should come down to the track (use the stairs by the band seating area on the North end of the stands) at the end of the 2nd quarter. Mrs. Burdette will line parents up in order once the halftime show begins. After the performance is done, we will have photo opportunities by the flagpole, so make sure to bring your phones and cameras.
OPTIONAL - MHS Band Trip to MSU
- 3:00pm - leave MHS (caravan up)
- 4:30pm - Spartan Marching Band rehearsal on campus
- 6:00pm - Rehearsal ends - student groups are welcome to head back home OR eat dinner either on campus or in the East Lansing area
Because we do not want students driving other students, please let me know if you can drive and are willing to take other kids.
Football Playoff Information - UPDATE
The first potential playoff game would be either Friday, October 28 or Saturday, October 29. I am reminding you that the MHS Band performs at all playoff games - both home and away. I know that lots of things are going on, but please keep this in mind as you are scheduling family trips and things like that.
MHSAA Playoff Points System - (make sure to select Division 4 in the drop-down menu)
Uniform Usage and Care
- Uniforms must be transported in garment bags
- Garment bags and hat boxes should have the student's name on them - the garment bag has a slot on the front that will fit an index card, and you can tape another index card to their hat box. This is important in helping to make sure that your child's uniform does not get confused with someone else's
- Hat boxes DO NOT go inside the garment bags. Shoes may go in the garment bag, but not in the main compartment with the uniform. Shoes should go in the zippered pocket at the bottom
- After a performance, uniforms should be removed from the garment bag, hung up separately, and allowed to air dry completely. This will help with odor elimination
- MHS BAND UNIFORMS MAY NOT BE PUT IN THE LAUNDRY AT HOME!!! Uniforms can only be dry-cleaned. If needed during the season, please take them to Heritage Cleaners in downtown Marshall. They are the only local dry cleaner who uses the correct chemicals that prevent our uniform colors from bleeding.
Home Football Game Schedule
5:00 PM - Report to Pavement (across from tennis courts)
5:35 PM - Dinner
6:10 PM - Get Dressed
6:20 PM - Uniform Inspection
6:30 PM - March to Stadium
6:50 PM - Pregame Performance
Halftime - Halftime Performance
Postgame - March to Band Room/Dismissal
Rehearsal Attendance
With that being said, we understand that there will be times when students must be absent - either due to illness, family emergencies, trip, conflicts, or other valid reasons. In the case of a student absence, please do the following:
- Parent/Guardian should communicate with Mr. Root as soon as you know that a conflict exists. Communicating directly with Mr. Root allows him to adjust rehearsal plans accordingly. Absences that are not emergencies should be communicated to Mr. Root at least 24 hours before the event.
- Do not assume that Mr. Root (or anyone else) is aware of your personal schedule - that includes athletic participation, jobs, or anything else.
- Refer to the MHS Band Handbook for more information regarding student absences. That can be found HERE (attendance policies are discussed in sections 2.4, 2.5, and 2.6)
Regarding conflicts with athletics, the following rule of thumb will be applied in order for students not to be put in the middle:
- Athletic contests (games, matches, etc.) will take priority over music rehearsals
- Music performances will take priority over practices
- If the conflict is between rehearsal/practice or performance/contest, the teacher and coach must be notified well in advance to work out a solution
