Weekly Newsletter: October 3rd-7th
Hello! Konnichiwa! Ahlan! 哈囉 ! Hallo!
We are so glad all of our Admirals returned safely from our hurricane days. York was able to provide a safe refuge for about 100 people seeking shelter. Early last week our teachers spent time preparing classrooms for evacuees, then returned to school on Friday be reset classrooms so we were ready to dive right back into lessons on Monday. * Please note that we WILL have school on Oct. 17th and we will have full days, not early release, on our Mondays in November and December to make up for missed time.
This week we celebrated "Start with Hello!" week. We had a great time learning about how to show kindness and respect to others through our morning show guest speakers. Students wore crazy socks on Tuesday to "sock it to loneliness" and bright colored shirts today to "brighten someone's day!" All week students were tasked with giving compliments and friendly greetings to one another.
Our Bookfair wrapped up today after many classes joyfully shopping the shelves for new reading materials throughout the week. We hope your student enjoys some quality reading time this weekend!
We would like to extend a MASSIVE thank you to all the volunteers who took time out of their schedules to help with this undertaking! A special shout out to our volunteer chairperson Mrs. Nelson and lead volunteer Mrs. Gross, thank you for charting the course of our first bookfair.
Thank you to the PTSA for the huge donation to allow every single student to shop at the fair!
Safety Patrol 5th graders have been working hard at their AM and PM posts, so they were rewarded with an after-school activity Thursday night as they faced off in a "Trouble" boardgame tournament. Thank you to our Patrols - keep up the great work keeping our campus safe and clean!
The Science Olympics have been ongoing within the elementary grade levels for the past couple of weeks. It's fun to travel around campus and see students using critical thinking and engineering skills to master tasks such as building roller coasters, marshmallow launchers, airplanes, aqua foils, and skyscrapers. Stay tuned next week for our announcement of York's winners who will advance to MOSI to face district opponents.

Hi, I’m Michele Hilliker! This is year 16 for me (wow, that makes me feel old lol)! I taught 1st grade for most of my career, but for the last few, I have been teaching 3rd grade reading, writing, and social studies with the most amazing partner! If you know anything about me, you know reading is my all time passion and teaching it is even more amazing!!! I’m from Plant City, FL, attended schools in this county my entire academic career, and graduated from USF (💛🤘🏻💚)! I have two kiddos of my own that both attend York as well! In my free time, I love spending time with my family, going to the beach, running, and going to church! I hope to see you all around campus this year!
