Writing: For Writing this past week the students continued working on writing a narrative essay. They practiced the strategy of writing about a memory of a person who is important to them. We began reading The SOS File for super examples of narrative writing.

Reading: We completed reading "Wilson Sat Alone". The Essential Questions for this unit is "How and why do characters respond to change? How does questioning help me to understand text? We are concentrating on making predictions and determining cause and effect. We began reading Meow Means Mischief , which provides ample opportunities for making predictions as well as being another example of narrative writing.

The students worked in their reading centers, which included: read around the room, Top Ten List (this week's topic is Autumn), Word Work (words with "ed" endings), Listening Center, and Sequencing.

Social Studies

This week we continued our Economics unit in Social Studies. Needs and wants as well as producers and consumers were the focus this week. You may wish to ask your child what the difference is between needs and wants. Also, ask them if they are a producer or consumer and have them tell you how they know.

Mathematics

This week in Math we worked on using function machines, counting strategies for subtraction, and math facts. We also had a pre-assessment for Unit 3.

Second Step

This week in Second Step we learned about identifying feelings. Ask your child what they look for to tell is a person is feeling sad, mad, happy, frustrated... We also continue to practice focusing, listening, using self talk to ignore distractions and being assertive.
