Be a Good Listener
Being a good listener is crucial to any productive relationship; however it can be especially important for those in the medical profession. Doctors must maintain a relationship with their patients that harbors an open arena for conversation, yet maintains an authoritative higher ground for the doctor to help the patient pick apart symptoms and their causes. Through being a good listener and asking engaging questions that are relevant to what the patient is saying lets them know that their thoughts and opinions are welcomed throughout the process of their medical evaluations.
Unfortunately being a good listener isn’t enough for many people. You also need to be an overall genuine and likable person, who can make them feel comfortable through a number of mediums. A sense of humor can be leveraged greatly in such a category, as well as the ability to relate to others. This requires a sense of humility that doctors need to carefully balance so that they make their patients feel comfortable without raising any questions about their own professionalism.

Dr. Barry Littlejohn, M.D. Endorses IUD’s
While only six percent of women in America use intrauterine devices (IUD’s), more healthcare providers continue to endorse the contraceptive. Dr. Barry Littlejohn, M.D. is one of these doctors, who regards IUD’s as the most effective and least expensive contraceptive treatments available.
An IUD is a T-shaped piece of plastic or copper that is inserted into a woman’s uterus and works by affecting the movements of sperm, preventing the sperm from reaching and fertilizing an egg. IUD’s come in two different forms: the first, the ParaGuard, is made of copper and can be effective in preventing pregnancy for up to 12 years; the other, made by Mirena and Skyla, is made of plastic and contains hormones, namely progestin, and can be effective for three to five years. Both types of IUD’s have their pros and cons, but their low price tag ranging between $0 and $1000 means low-cost and effective contraception for women for up to 12 years.
Dr. Barry Littlejohn, M.D. believes that IUD’s are the best form of contraception for women, noting, “while only six percent of women in America have an IUD, more than 40 percent of female OB/GYN’s have them,” thus making them one of the most recommended forms of birth control in the whole of American medicine. Dr. Littlejohn says that it’s easy for women to get an IUD, and that while it may have a large price tag up front, “it manages to pay for itself over the course of it’s 12-year lifespan.” While they may be Dr. Littlejohn’s recommended form of contraception, he does note that they are not for everyone and any woman interested in having an IUD inserted should consult her primary care physician.
