CONGRATULATIONS COUGARS!
YOUNG AUTHORS NIGHT CELEBRATION
Last week, two of our Alta Vista Cougars were recognized at Union School District's Young Authors Night Celebration. Vivian S. was selected for her story Mysterious Frogs. Amit V. shared highlights from his book Here We Go Again. Congratulations to our Alta Vista authors!CHORUS PERFORMANCE AT BOARD MEETING
Twenty members from the Alta Vista Chorus filled the USD Board Room with a selection of show tunes from tonight's concert. It was a wonderful way to open the meeting. We had an opportunity to hear the entire 70 member chorus at tonight's concert and it was magical.
UPCOMING LOCKDOWN DRILL
The safety of the students and staff at Alta Vista is very important to us. In order to maintain a safe environment for our children to learn and grow, it is necessary that we practice our emergency response plans by having drills designed to exercise our procedures. Since the beginning of the school year, we have had monthly earthquake or fire drills. The students have quickly become skilled at following our emergency procedures.
Due to the current national climate that we live in, we will be conducting a lockdown drill at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 16th. During a lockdown drill, we will secure the school buildings and safely shelter all students, staff and visitors inside the buildings. All of the doors will be locked and will remain locked until the conclusion of the drill. No one will be allowed to enter or leave the campus until the drill is complete.
The purpose of this drill is to keep the students safe from any danger outside the building. Prior to the drill, teachers will lead discussions with their students. In addition to outlining the procedures, teachers will also provide a grade level appropriate reason for a lockdown drill. Our youngest students will hear that we practice for times when it may be unsafe for us outside. Other explanations may include reference to wild animals (coyotes) or "bad" people on campus. Older students may hear that if there was a robbery at a nearby store, the police department will ask us to remain inside to be sure we are as safe as possible.
During earthquake drills, we regularly describe what students may hear, see, or experience during a real earthquake. Rather than escalating emotions, this provides an important context. Our goal is to do the same thing with our lockdown drill. If you have any questions about the discussion in your child's classroom, I encourage you to reach out to your child's teacher.
We anticipate our lockdown drill to take approximately thirty minutes. If you need to pick up your child for an afternoon appointment on Monday, please be sure to check him/her out prior to 1:00. Thank you.
