Clarification for concern of excessive screen time
I appreciate voiced concerns about the amount of screen time for students. Rest assured, your students will not be on camera or on screen for 5-6 hours per day. In fact, elementary students will receive about 3 hours per day of “live” instruction from their teacher, and about 2 hours per day where they will complete independent or collaborative tasks while also having access to their teacher if they need assistance during this time. (Many of these tasks will be offline and can be completed at other times of the day or evening that work better for students and parents.) Plus, “live” instruction does not mean staring at a screen or listening to a teacher talk for the entire time. For example, students may observe a 15-minute math mini-lesson from their teacher then turn away from their computer screen for 15 to 20 minutes to complete problems or tasks in their workbooks at home. Finally, there will be multiple 10-minute breaks, mindfulness and movement opportunities, and full lunch periods for both students and teachers to refresh their minds and bodies.
