School Update
Dear Students & Families,
Outdoor recess policies:
Our goal is to get students outside to play during recess whenever it is possible. Though federal recess guidelines suggest letting the children outside when it is above 10 degrees Fahrenheit, we have found that other variables such as precipitation, wind, and whether or not the sun is outplaying just as a significant role with regards to children's safety and comfort levels. For instance, if the children have had indoor recess for several days in a row and there is no wind and the sun is shining but it is cold (15 degrees or so) we still may let the children outside to play; if it is 15 degrees, windy, and overcast with moisture in the air, we may instead have indoor recess. We make this judgment call each day just prior to recess time as our beloved New England weather can shift swiftly.
Parents can best prepare students by sending them to school each day with a warm winter coat, gloves, and a hat. If your child is in need of a coat or winter clothing, please let us know as we often get donations. We also have many warm clothes in our extensive Lost and Found area that children are welcome to borrow at any time.
We would love to let the children play in the snow every day, but it does take quite a while to dress and undress the children and we have found that in spite of our efforts to help everyone be prepared, many children still get wet and cold and this has an adverse effect on their afternoon.
Thanks for your support of our policies. Keeping the children safe is our #1 priority! If you have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
I look forward to a great and safe week!
Sincerely,
Dr. Marguerite Lackard
Principal

Make Attendance a Priority
As a partner in your child’s education, you can help by working with us to make school attendance a priority.
Here are several tips to help your child attend school every day:
Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session;
Talk to teachers, social workers, or counselors for advice if your child(ren) feel anxious about going to school;
Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your student to school; and
Above all, let us know how we can help with any barriers you may be facing to get your child to school every day.

OTHER
SECOND STEP
Second Step is a program rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL) that helps transform schools into supportive, successful learning environments uniquely equipped to encourage children to thrive. Second Step’s holistic approach helps create a more empathetic society by providing tools to enable them to take an active role in the social-emotional growth and safety of today’s children. (See attached video).
For Families
Starting soon, our schoolwide theme is our school as a welcoming place where every student feels like he or she belongs. In our morning announcements and school assembly, we’ll be reminding students to welcome others and act and speak in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. In addition, we’ll be reminding students of our school rules. (Fill in the school rules here.)
We’ll also begin teaching the Second Step program, which includes lessons that support these behaviors.
Support your child at home in welcoming others and acting and speaking in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. Please tell your child’s teacher if you have questions about specific ways you can help your child with these behaviors at home.

Grade 5, Unit 1 Lesson 1: Empathy and Respect
Sometimes students feel their emotions in a “big” way. They may not be able to identify what they are feeling or remember the tools that are available. In situations like this, the teacher may decide that the best way to help the student with their feelings is to move the class to another location. This gives the student privacy to work with a support staff member and use some of the social and emotional tools needed to express and re-set their “big” feelings.
If a situation like this does occur, the teacher in the classrooms always reminds students that everyone has feelings and everyone needs help with them from time to time. Typically, a class meeting occurs to think about ways to support one another as a classroom community.
It is our belief that everyone at times needs help when they have strong feelings.

The Bilingual Education Department had a Swap Day on November 16th and it was a success! We received a lot of donations from the whole Framingham community and we are truly thankful for everyone's generosity. Hundreds of people attended and everything was gone by the end of the event.
This is a great thing to celebrate, however, our ongoing Community Closet is completely empty. We are still collecting winter coats, hats, gloves, boots, and scarves - all sizes - for our students. Once we have the donations, feel free to contact us if/when you have a student in need.
We would like to have a box in each school to make it easier for families to drop off these items. When the box is full, someone from each school can call our office and we will pick up the donations. The boxes were donated by a former EL student at FPS and we will be delivering them next week, along with the flyers.
We hope we can count on you and we kindly ask you to share the message with your staff, include it in your newsletter to families and help us spread the word.
Thank you!
