Carl Cozier News ~ November 2020

Note from the Principal

Hello Cozier Families! I hope your family is doing well, adjusting to the new normal of our school year and enjoying crisp fall days in our beautiful corner of the world.

As you know, we welcomed our kindergarten learners and students supported in our primary life skills classroom back into the building last week. It was delightful to hear children's voices, see kids walkng in the hallways and playing on the playground. We are looking forward to welcoming our first graders and students supported in the intermediate life skills classroom to in-person learning on November 12th. As Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. McAuliffe said, "they just really need to play" and that's exactly what our early learning classrooms promote - learning through play. It's great to do this in "real life" as our kinders kept saying last week.

There are many things to feel gratitude and hope for this weekend. Specifically, I want thank each of you for partnering with our school, for trusting us with your children and for continuing to support the work that are teachers are doing each day. I appreciate each of you and know that we are in this together and will emerge stronger and more connected.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with questions or feedback. My cell phone number is: 360.988.3600. You are welcome to call or text me any time.

Regards, Ari

PTA News

From your PTA President, Val Miller: Carl Cozier’s PTA is ramping up for an unprecedented year! We’d love your input on how the PTA can safely serve the Cozier community. Our first meeting is Wednesday, November 18th at 6:30pm via Zoom. All are welcome (even if you are not a PTA member yet) Here's the link: https://zoom.us/j/99432883365?pwd=Ti9rZ1pyU2p4eWY5elNscEpnOXJ0dz09. We hope to see you there!

Attendance Reminders

A reminder that daily attendance is being taken by classroom teachers. Our office team is reviewing absences each day and reaching out to families to ensure that every child has the tools needed to engage in online learning. Being marked “present” means that your child has participated in live learning, watched a video post on Seesaw or engaged in an activity on Seesaw.

We know that absences happen, just like they do when we are learning in our building. When your child is absent due to illness, appointment or a family event, please call the office at 360.676.6410 (press option 1 for attendance) so that we can excuse the absence. Thank you for your help with this – and please reach out if questions.

Counselor Updates

Many of you have come to know our school counselor, Renee Kenady over the years. Renee has decided to reduce her schedule to one day per week with the hope of retiring at the end of the school year. Renee will continue to support fourth and fifth graders with lessons and online activities. We are thankful for the years that Renee has dedicated to our school community and happy to know that she can slowly transition into retirement.

We have hired Adrienne Watkins as our new school counselor. Adrienne may look familiar to you, as she has worked at Cozier for the past year and half in the capacity of a Unity Care community health partner. Prior to her work at Unity Care, Adrienne was an elementary school counselor in Alaska. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and we are excited to welcome her to Cozier. Please feel free to reach out to her with questions or needs: Adrienne.Watkins@bellinghamschools.org
