March is Reading Month
March is Reading Month is HERE! Our MiRM student leaders brainstormed 4 Olympic sports that could be used for our MiRM theme and put it out to the Silver Springs students and staff to vote. The 2020 MiRM theme is….Stroke Through the Pages of a Good Book! (swimming). Student reading logs and March event calendars will go home in Monday envelopes on Monday, March 2nd, so be on the lookout for these important papers. Everything you need to know about March is Reading Month can be found on the 2020 March is Reading Month Smore Newsletter, which you can access by clicking the button below.
Let's synergize together to meet our 255,000 minute goal. We can do it!
Enjoy reading together as a family during March is Reading Month!

Get Involved…Make a Difference
Yes, we need you! The Silver Springs PTA is looking for caring parents to get involved on the Executive Board for the 2020-21 academic year!
We need to fill the Treasurer position and one Vice President position.
The Treasurer position is key because there can’t be a PTA without one. Most of the work can be done from home and the previous Treasurer will help guide you through the duties.
We will be in jeopardy of losing all the events and educational programs the PTA provides like Fun Fair, Daddy Daughter Dance, IXL and lots more without a complete board.
We are all busy and our time is limited…BUT this is our PTA, serving our children. Every parent can get involved and make a difference! You will definitely play a major role in helping make Silver Springs better and fun for our students and families and staff. Help make the 2020-21 year great for our children and school.
Thank you! Please contact Kristin Gifford for more information at: kmgifford327@gmail.com

Coronavirus - An Explanation for Students
Some of our students are hearing a lot about coronavirus, particularly our older students. Many don't understand much about it, and they may have questions about it.
This link below was recommended as something to share with students. It's factual, not scary, and it reinforces all those common sense actions like handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when ill that are things we should do to protect ourselves and others from a variety of germs. Please review this information and consider whether this is something you would like to share with your child. We believe parents of students grades 3 - 5 will find it helpful.
Additionally, if your children are sick with vomiting or diarrhea, please keep them home for 24 hours after the last episode. If your child has had a fever, they need to be home for 24 hours after their temperature returns to normal without use of Tylenol or Motrin.
Thanks for helping us keep our Eagles healthy!

Brownie Troop - Book Drive
The Silver Springs 3rd grade Girl Scout Brownie Troop is holding a children’s book drive February 5-April 3. We are partnering with Rx for Reading Detroit to distribute the books collected.
Rx for Reading Detroit is a non-profit literacy initiative that works to expand access to
children’s books and support families in reading with their children. They distribute
approximately 2,000 children’s books a month with the help of community partners,
including low-income health, dental, and WIC clinics, homeless shelters, local schools
and Head Start programs and community centers.
The girls have set a goal to collect 450 books. There are collection boxes in front of
the main office and in the library at the school. We are looking for all gently used
books from board books up to teenage level books. Please help us synergize to reach
our goal!

Supporting the The 7 Habits at home!
7-Habits Take Home Activity for March
This month’s Habit: Habit 5 Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Activity: Eyes, Ears, Heart Activity
Due Date: March 31, 2020
Habit #5 - Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
What this means: Listen before you talk. In order to communicate effectively, we must first understand each other.
“I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings.”
“I try to see things from their viewpoints.”
“I listen to others without interrupting.”
“I am confident in voicing my ideas.”
“I look people in the eyes when talking.”
How can I do this in my life?
1. Listen.
2. Put yourself in the other person’s place.
3. Notice a person’s body language, tone, and reflection in their voice.
Great Books for Habit #5-Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Alejandro’s Gift by Richard E. Albert
The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown
Stellaluna by Janell Cannon
Jamaica’s Find by Juanita Havill
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka
