Mass Readings for Sunday, August 15: Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on August 15, and is regarded as the most important Marian feast day in the Church's calendar. It celebrates Our Blessed Mother being assumed body and soul into heaven after the end of her earthly life.
Assumption Day commemorates the belief that when Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, died, her body was not subjected to the usual process of physical decay. On the contrary, we believe that her body was “assumed” into heaven and reunited there with her soul. The word "assumption" comes from the Middle English "assumpcioun," which means "a taking up into heaven", and from Latin "assumptio" which means "a taking"
The feast is marked as a Holy Day of Obligation in our Catholic Church. Around the world, religious parades and popular festivals are held to celebrate this day and our Blessed Mother. This week, explain to your children the significance of this Holy Day. You can pray the Hail Mary Prayer together with your family to help to give your children a better understanding of Mary and this special day.
Activities for Family
Assumption of Mary Craft
On the Feast of the Assumption, we remember when Our Mother was taken up to heaven, body and soul. To help children visualize and understand this joyous occasion, kids can create this craft at home that concretely illustrates how much God loved His Mother.
Follow the directions below, using the pictures to help create this craft:
Materials
- 2 Pieces of paper
- Scissors & Glue
- Cotton balls
- Green strips of paper
- Decorating/coloring materials
Procedure
- Create and color the image of our Blessed Virgin Mary, 2 angels, and the crown, as shown in the picture. You may also print these images using this link: https://www.reallifeathome.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/The-Feast-of-the-Assumption-.pdf
- At the top part of the first sheet of paper, cut a small horizontal slit. Above the slit, glue the image of the crown.
- On each side of the slit, glue cotton balls to make it look like clouds. Then glue the angels above the cotton balls. This signifies HEAVEN.
- On the bottom part of the paper, glue green strips of paper. This signifies EARTH.
- Using the second piece of paper, cut out a thin strip that fits in the slit of the first sheet of paper from Step #2. Place the strip through the slit. At the bottom of the strip, glue the image of the Blessed Virgin.
You can now pull Mother Mary from earth towards heaven, where God and the angels await for her. As you pull her the image of Mary up to HEAVEN, the crown will appear above her head.
