Great Things at NBS - #ColtPride
The learning continues! This week at NBS our colts demonstrated their #ColtPride during all our safety drills. I am so proud of each and every student. We received great praise from our community and district officials for following all safety protocols. We ended our safety week with our bus evacuation drill today. Thank you for your support at home.
This week also brought Math in Focus professional development to our district. Teachers attended sessions with Dr. Susan Resnick. This valuable training and coaching supports the continued math instruction in our classrooms.
PARENT DROP OFF: Reminder, please note that starting on Monday, the parent drop off line will have a hard stop at 7:50. If you arrive at 7:50 or after, please pull around to the front door and have your children enter there. If you arrive at 8:00 or after, please park in a legal parking spot and walk your child into the office, sign them in, and we will get them off to class. Thank you.
MOVIE NIGHT: So far we have 300 families signed up for our Friday Night Flick on October 1st. If you are looking for a great way to spend time with your family and the school community, please see the details below and sign up. Students will be voting for the movie here at school and the voting will close on Tuesday.
Upcoming Parent/Teacher conferences: I just wanted you to make note of our fall conference dates. Conferences are held on Wednesday, October 13th from 4 - 8 pm and Thursday, October 14th from 1 to 7 pm. Please note, our Chinese Immersion will have a slightly different schedule to provide times for all our families in this program. We will again be using the online conference scheduler Meet the Teacher. It will open for parents on Monday, October 4th at 8:30 am. Additional details will be forthcoming in a separate communication.
As always, thank you for your continued support of our school. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions regarding your child's learning experience at North Barrington Elementary School, please feel free to contact me at 847-304-4870 or lwest@barrington220.org.
Enjoy your weekend,

SPOTLIGHT ON STEM
This Week in STEM
This week, all classes had STEM during their regularly scheduled Library time. The elementary STEM program focuses on three main areas: Engineering, Robotics and Programming. This week’s STEM lessons all focused on Programming. Students at all grade levels downloaded a programming app on their iPad that they can use throughout the school year (and summer!) to practice programming skills. In grades K-2, we use the codeSpark app. In grades 3-5, we use the Tynker app as the main programming app. Other programming apps may also be used as the year progresses, but these are the two main apps that we start the year with. Now that students have the app on their iPad and have been instructed how to program on the app, they are encouraged to practice their programming skills at their own pace. That means they can use the app in the classroom or at home whenever they have permission. We will also use the apps in future STEM classes. If you have any questions about codeSpark or Tynker, please contact the STEM teacher, Mrs. Rita Thurston, at rthurston@barrington220.org.
Shield Testing Information
If you have trouble with the process, please call the office. We will put an identifier on your child's ID card so they are not tested. Then we can work to get the information into IC. Additionally, please note that the timeframe to process the opt out forms is now 7 days.
Masks & Water Bottles
Also, your child should bring a refillable water bottle to school each day. The bottle filling features are working but the drinking fountains are closed due to Covid.
Thank you.
