Coffee Brewed with Purpose
Students in Coach Beer’s Business and Marketing class are engaged in hands-on learning as they kicked off the semester with the opening of their student-run coffee shop. They take orders using a Google form (sent to faculty and staff) and deliver the coffee to classrooms and offices throughout campus. Students rotate jobs with some gathering orders, some making the coffee and others delivering the beverages. As the project continues, additional items will be added to the menu, including smoothies, tea and hot chocolate. The project allows students to apply the business and marketing concepts they have learned, and the operation of the coffee shop gives them experience in working with suppliers, managing inventory and sales, developing marketing strategies, and managing distribution.
The business is run with the following core values:
- Work Ethic- “How we do anything, is how we do everything”
- Customer Service- be like Chick Fil-A
- Attitude- Christ-like attitude
- Grit- it’s the tough things that make you great
- Passion- allow your passion to become your purpose, and one day it will be your profession
Faculty and staff are thrilled to play a part in this purposeful project – the freshly-brewed, hand-delivered coffee is a treat! Next, students plan to involve a panel of parents. Dawgs 360 will invite interested parents to campus for free taste testing and feedback. If you are interested in becoming a panelist, email Elizabeth McDonel at emcdonel@gwa.com for an appointment time.

Try This Recipe!
Pour yourself a cup of coffee and warm your heart on a cold winter morning with a cinnamon roll recipe from GWA parent Annette Penley (mom of first grader Wesley) who made these for the senior first-grade breakfast. She makes the cinnamon rolls every Christmas morning for her children. Annette prepares them the night before and puts them in the refrigerator before the second rise. She bakes them Christmas morning while the kids are opening their presents. Monday’s school holiday and snowy forecast might just be the perfect time to bake Annette’s amazing cinnamon rolls!
