Macleans Primary School Community
Hi Everyone
Moving into the end of November means all of us at Macleans Primary are working hard to complete all of the 2023 learning whilst planning and organising for 2024. It's a busy time of year for all of us, but with all of the 'mahi tahi' we are able to ensure everything that is meant to happen happens well.
For those of you asking about the the amazing Macleans Primary School Yearbook, I have some news...the yearbook can be purchased now! See details below.
The Christmas Lights in Howick will be lit up on Friday 17 November, 7.15pm at Stockade Hill. For the second year in row Macleans Primary will be performing with the Macleans Primary Choir taking the stage to sing a couple of songs. so please come along to Stockade Hill on Friday.
Thanks to everyone who has completed the 2023 Parent Survey. The survey will close on Monday 20 November. Parent voice helps us in our Year Review 2023 and Annual Planning 2024. Please spend a few minutes and complete our 2023 Annual Parent Survey. Your thoughts and ideas will be shared and discussed at the next board meeting. Click here for community survey.
The end of the year also means some staff changes for the following year, more so than in recent years as most of the teachers we are farewelling are moving out of Auckland and overseas. Speaking with my Principal colleagues, Macleans Primary is not alone in the teacher movement. We will be welcoming some new teachers and teachers aides for 2024 and farewelling teachers who are moving on. We have been fortunate to have received a number of applications which means we have been 'spoilt for choice' when hiring new teachers. The new teachers we have hired are a combination of experienced and beginning teachers; they are dynamic and are aligned with the Macleans vision of the child's well-being and learning at the centre of all we do. In the next newsletter on 29 November, I will be able to announce in more detail teacher names and update the classes for 2024.
Heaps of great information, updates and celebrations in this newsletter that cover all aspects of the Macleans Values and Macleans Learning vision.
Please enjoy this newsletter
Regards & Nga Mihi

Hauora/Health & Well-Being: How much sleep and why
Sleep patterns and behaviours change in children, from birth to adulthood. Why is adequate sleep important for a child? Sleep is especially important for children due to the impact it has on both mental and physical development. Sleep is the time for restoration and for children’s bodies to recharge and retain the information they have learned throughout the day. During deep non-REM sleep, the body’s energy is restored, growth and repair occurs and important brain development hormones are released.
Sleep deprivation stifles the immune system, negatively affects mood and behaviour, and can also hinder a child’s performance in school. Good sleep is a vital component for a healthy lifestyle. There is a great deal of variability with the amount of sleep children should get, but this table below is a good overall guide to use for recommended total sleep per day.
Newborns, 0-1 year: 16 hours
Toddlers, 1-2 years: 11 to 14 hours
Preschoolers, 3-5 years: 10 to 13 hours
School-aged, 6-13 years: 9 to 11 hours
Teenagers, 14-17 years: 8 to 10 hours
It may be appropriate for some children to sleep an average of one to two hours more or less than the aforementioned recommendation, based on their genetic and physiological needs.

PTA 2023...Thanks for the Netabll Skirts and Decodable Readers
Look at those happy faces! The most recent donations from the PTA include 20 brand new netball skirts and 150 Decodable readers for the junior classes, to support their Structured Literacy journey. We can’t wait to share more of what the PTA are doing for Macleans Primary School!

Do you have a child turning five?
If you have a child turning five within the NEXT YEAR please could you enrol them now or as soon as possible as it helps plan for classes and teachers for 2024. Thanks! Please collect your enrolment pack from the office, or email/phone (534-5191) the office team on: s.waller@macleansprimary.school.nz s.jarvis@macleansprimary.school.nz
Property Updates
Fencing - The last bit of fencing to be completed soon once the old concrete wall is removed.
Signage - Some new signage is being planned.
R6-R9 - We have decided to complete the hall first and then R6-R9 to avoid disruption to the classes. Start time is likely to be mid-year now with possibly some preliminary work being done sooner.
Painting - The second part of our external paintin is being planned for December-January.
Enviro. Initiative: Chip and food packets that can be turned into blankets (anything with reflective packaging)
Bring in your old chip packets and they can be used to make blankets. With shiny sides facing in, they become like emergency blankets where the user's body heat is reflected to help keep people warm and dry in cold or damp conditions. They can be dropped off in the office or given to Teacher Aide Davinia Massold.
