The Absorbent Mind
Montessori Ages 3-6
Children between the age of birth and six possess an "absorbent mind". This almost genius capacity for mental absorption enables them to learn their native tongue, to perfect movement and internalize order. Maria Montessori observed that children also experience Sensitive Periods in their development. These are periods of special sensitivity when the child is attracted to certain stimuli in his or her environment allowing them to acquire certain knowledge and skills. These periods occur universally for all children at approximately the same age and provide the time for optimal development of that particular skill or knowledge.
The 3 to 6-year old child is undergoing a process of self-construction. The application of the Montessori philosophy and the specifically designed Montessori equipment aids the child's ability to absorb knowledge and continue this path of self-construction. There are four main areas in the preschool program: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language and Mathematics. Considerable emphasis is also placed on Creative Arts, Music, Science, Geography and Cultural Studies.
How to Pack a Montessori-Style Lunch
Parents, please note that it is extremely important to send nutritious food in your child’s lunch. Please refer to the following foods that we recommend:
Real fruit (not fruit in syrup)
Whole grain breads or other whole grain items
Yogurt (no high fructose corn syrup)
Cheese
Meat
Pasta (not in a can)
Popcorn
Crackers
Pretzels
Homemade pizza,
Any dinner leftovers that your child would enjoy for lunch
Drinks should be 100% fruit juice
Milk or water – provided by the school
Foods which are Not Recommended:
Candy, cookies, potato chips, sodas, “fruit” chews, or any foods made with high fructose corn syrup. Squeezable foods made to be squeezed directly into the mouth are not allowed because we want children to use utensils when eating.
Tuition
Parents,
Just a reminder that tuition is due on Friday before the week of attendance or no later than Tuesday the week of attendance (unless arrangements have been made with the school's directors). We are tuition based which means that tuition is due weekly from August 22 – June 2, 2017. Tuition is also due when a student is absent or when school is closed during holidays. Parents are allowed one free week of tuition and may choose the week during Christmas or spring break. Wheatley Montessori follows Greenville County Schools regarding closings due to inclement weather.
