"In the Know... Teaching and Learning at McCarthy School!
Each week in this new section of our newsletter, families can learn a bit about what students are learning at each grade level. This will contain highlights from the week, pictures from classrooms, and more!
Into Reading, the new FPS Literacy Curriculum
This week we highlight our new Literacy Curriculum, Into Reading. A K-6 reading curriculum, HMH Into Reading uses the latest in literacy research to ensure every student learns to read and write with confidence. Teachers and students are getting familiar with the new structures, the many resources to support learning, and the format of the program. The program is broken into modules, which vary in length, and include a Module Topic and an Essential Question that guides the module. Essential questions are designed to encourage further questioning about a particular subject. They’re intended to spark a conversation about the subject rather than simply providing a factual answer to the question.
This week we share each grade levels Module Topic, Essential Question, and a brief summary of what students will be learning and able to do by the end of the module.
Kindergarten
Our K students will be completing their 10 Days of Learning this week on Wednesday. They are establishing classroom routines, building community, and learning all about Kindergarten and McCarthy School. Students will begin their Into Reading Module 1 at the end of this week. Module 1 topic for Kindergarten will be Curious About Kindergarten. The Essential Question is "What will I discover about Kindergarten?" It’s the start of Kindergarten, and children are brimming with
curiosity. Who is my teacher? Will I make friends? What will I learn? In this module, children will find out that the year ahead promises to be full of new experiences. They will meet new people, explore new places, learn new skills, and think of new ideas. There’s so much to discover—so let’s get started!
1st Grade
In Literacy, the first module topic in our first grade curriculum is "Nice to Meet You!" The essential question is "How can making new friends and learning new things help us?" The start of a new school year is an exciting time for children. They will meet new people. They will try and learn new things. For some children, though, this time of year can also be challenging.
In this module, children will read about how the people they meet and the experiences they have can help them. Children will read about the different activities they can do at school. They also will read about what makes a good friend, the many different types of friends they can have, and what makes each person special.
2nd Grade
In literacy, topic of the first module is Be a Super Citizen. The essential question for module 1 is "How can being a good citizen make a difference to others?" Students will read about characters and real people who are good citizens, and we will learn how our actions can make a difference to others. Students will also write a personal narrative about something they’ve done to make the world a better place.
3rd Grade
In literacy, the topic of the first module is What a Character! The essential question for module 1 is "What makes a character interesting?" In this module, students will listen to, read, and view a variety of texts and media that present them with information about bold, interesting characters.
A genre focus on realistic fiction provides students with opportunities to identify point of view, literary elements, and theme in order to better understand unfamiliar texts. Students will also encounter fantasy to build knowledge across genres.
As students build their vocabulary and synthesize topic knowledge, they will learn that each protagonist is a unique individual, just as they are.
4th Grade
In literacy, the first module topic is What Makes us Who We Are? The essential question for this first module is "How do your experiences help shape your identity?"
In this module, students will listen to, read, and view a variety of texts and media that present them with information about our identities.
A genre focus on different kinds of stories provides students with opportunities to identify point of view and recognize figurative language in order to better understand unfamiliar texts. Students will also encounter a photo essay and narrative poetry to build knowledge across genres.
As students build their vocabulary and synthesize topic knowledge, they will learn that our identities are shaped through our experiences, personal interests, and passions.
5th Grade
In literacy, the module topic is "Inventors at Work." The essential question is "How do your experiences help shape your identity?" In this module, students will listen to, read, and view a variety of texts and media that present them with information about our identities.
A genre focus on different kinds of stories provides students with opportunities to identify point of view and recognize figurative language in order to better understand unfamiliar texts. Students will also encounter a photo essay and narrative poetry to build knowledge across genres.

News of Note
Open House/Family Night/Curriculum Night October 4, 2023 6:30-8:00pm
Our annual Curriculum Night/Open House/Family Night is going to be on October 4, 2023, from 6:30-8:00pm. This year, our McCarthy will be a student centered/led event for students with their families. Students will visit their classrooms with their family members to show them their classroom, explain some of their work from the first weeks of school, and guide them around the classroom to share what their day at McCarthy School looks and feels like. Additionally, the students will take their families on a tour of the school, visiting the library, art room, cafeteria, music room, gym, and yes…..lost and found! More information will be coming in the next few weeks!
Interested in Volunteering at McCarthy? School Council may be for YOU!
The McCarthy School Council is a representative, school based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, community members and is required to be established by each school pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C. This year, we are hoping to expand our council to include parent representation from all grade levels and community members. We meet once per month, and will focus on the following responsibilities:
School councils are to assist principals in:
Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
Reviewing the annual school building budget
Formulating a school improvement plan

ALL ARE WELCOME and encouraged to join our council!
Transportation Mobile app to Track the Bus!
Framingham Public Schools is working with Edulog to provide families with a mobile app to track the location of their child’s bus.
The hope is that families will have peace of mind knowing the location of the bus before it comes to pick up children and drop them off at school - and likewise, in the afternoon, it lets parents/guardians know where the bus is as it approaches the child’s drop-off in the afternoon.
The Transportation Department will still send real-time messaging via in app messaging if your bus number changes for a particular run due to a driver shortage. If this happens, you will receive instructions to follow the substitute bus for that day. To receive these operational messages, please be sure to enable your notification settings. To read those messages, you will need to visit the homepage and tap on the envelope icon in the top right corner.
