THE JAYHAWK BLAST
JHS Bulletin - Volume I, Issue 3, 11/1/2019
A Message From The Co-Principals
Good Afternoon and Happy Friday,
We are happy to release the third issue of the Jayhawk Blast. It has been a great few weeks at JHS. Some highlights include the World Language National Honor Society Induction Ceremony, the Halloween Costume Contest, the Canon Future Authors Project student book signing and some amazing accomplishments by our athletic teams. In addition, the PTA Council hosted the highly informative and interactive Parent University last Tuesday night. We appreciate all of their support and the ability to work closely with parents to share information and consider issues surrounding our students.
An important reminder that AP Exam payments were due on Friday, November 1. We are extending the deadline to next Wednesday, November 6. If you have not yet paid for your child’s AP exams please have your child bring the payment to Mr. Cohen’s office. Once the deadline passes, College Board will charge an additional $40 per exam for late payments. If you have any questions regarding AP payments, please contact Ms. Behr at kbehr@jerichoschools.org.
Did you know that we have a new outdoor classroom at JHS? In this issue you can read about a recent trip to the outdoor classroom by our Forensics classes to investigate a mock crime scene. This issue of the Jayhawk Blast is filled with important information, notifications, student highlights and much, much more. So please take the time to read the entire newsletter including all links to supporting documents and resources.
Finally, take note of the upcoming events and important deadlines. Please remember that November 5 is a Superintendent’s Conference Day and schools will be closed for students. We hope to see you at the next PTSA Meeting on November 12 at 7pm in the High School Library.
Sincerely,
Joan Rosenberg and David Cohen

HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
World Language Honor Society Induction Ceremony
On Thursday, October 24, 2019, 94 student candidates were inducted into the World Language Honor Society for a foreign language that they are studying at Jericho High School. Performances at the induction ceremony included a poem recitation, a song, a fusion ribbon dance, and two skits. As candidates recited the oath, they lit their candles to symbolize the start of their membership among a prestigious group of students devoted to studying a foreign language and culture. The students inducted have maintained a commitment to service and high grades in order to attain membership in the Chinese, French, Italian Latin, and Spanish Honor Societies. We congratulate these students on their achievement and wish them continued success in their language learning endeavors.
Canon Future Authors Project
Jericho students were selected to participate, alongside teachers, in a summer writing workshop with the goal of expanding their adoration for writing, while honing story development and critical thinking skills. Students receive invaluable direction throughout the project from certified teachers, along with local, published authors and Canon experts. The book was presented at an event October 29 at the school, commemorating the participating students’ completion of Canon Solutions America’s Future Authors Project. This year’s theme, Always Becoming, was inspired by the memoir Becoming by Michelle Obama. Built on a foundation of growth, change, transformation, and difference, the group’s overarching goal for the compilation was to examine personal advancement, as both writers and individuals.
JHS Outdoor Classroom
A Mock Crime Scene was created by Mrs. Cancemi for her Forensic Classes so students could practice documenting a crime scene. They were grouped in teams of 4 and each took on a specific role. One student was the Lead Investigator who was responsible for note taking, deciding on an appropriate search pattern and overseeing the documentation. One student was the photographer and was responsible for following the search pattern designated by the Lead, photographing and logging each piece of evidence found at the scene. The other two students were responsible for sketching the scene. They had to measure the perimeter and each piece of evidence using the triangulation method (2-fixed points). Each member of the team was encouraged to communicate and cooperate throughout the exercise. On Day 2 the groups worked on the lab questions, a final sketch (to scale) and put together an investigative plan going forward.
The class was held in the new outdoor classroom. Assistant Principal, Dr. Artiles assisted in the investigation!
Luke Markovino (Senior) and Grant Ying (Freshman). Brian Reich (Sophomore) is not pictured.
