Jeffrey/Mead Team Blog
November 7th - November 18th
Math
Number Talks and Computation groups have continued. Students are focusing on strategies that will build their flexibility and number sense.
During our WIN (What I Need) Block we are working with students in small groups on concepts from Unit 1 as well as computation skills. Now that we have finished Unit 1 we have created groups based on what students need. The areas of focus are multiplication, division and volume. If students were proficient with all concepts on Unit 1 they will be getting some enrichment during this time.
November Calendar Grid focuses on types of triangles, motion and ordered pairs. Calendar Collector involves converting meters to centimeters, decimeters and kilometers.

"What I Need" Blocks
Read Aloud
Mrs. Mead's class is reading A Tangle of Knots. This is a complicated story that revolves around about 9 characters in Poughkeepsie, New York. In this world though most everyone has a Talent, something they are just naturally good at. We have met all of the characters which include Cady, an orphan looking for her forever family, Marigold, a middle child still searching for her Talent, Toby, a man who is ready to be a father again but also has many secrets, and The Owner, who is grumpy, steals talents and is searching for something. The characters have all been brought together to live in The Lost Luggage Emporium that is owned by The Owner. The course of events unfold over a day in the story. This is the type of story that seems fragmented until the end when every piece of the puzzle fits!
Science
Ms. Jeffrey's class continued learning about physical and chemical changes in matter. They did some fun hands on experiments with materials such as yeast and baking soda. We will wrap up this unit next week and move onto social studies after the fall break.
Students in Mrs. Mead's class worked on physical and chemical changes in matter. We did a science experiment showing a chemical change using yeast and hydrogen peroxide. We have one more experiment to do when we come back from break involving borax that we ran out of time for on Friday!
