Math Updates
In Math this week we learned the expand and trade strategy to solve subtraction problems. We then had an Exploration day where we looked at different ways to measure area, partition rectangles, and represent data on a scaled bar graph. We kept with the graph theme and learned about scaled picture graphs and were able to create our own. Lastly, we looked at multiplication squares and the commutative property of multiplication (2x6=12 and 6x2=12) which just mean that we ca multiply numbers in any order and get the same product.
Building a READING LIFE
This week we continued our Mystery Unit discussing how any good detective doesn't work alone, but works with a partner. This is the same when it comes to reading mysteries, so we discussed theories and clues with our partners. We also talked about remembering what is happening in our mysteries by asking ourselves the following questions at the end of each chapter; "What's the main event that happened? and "Are there small details that REALLY matter?", Lastly we discussed "What is the same among all mystery books?" and "How do mystery books go?" The students are very engaged in this unit, and their excitement shows through their discussions with their partners!
Word Study
Word Study tests will be on Friday, November 9th.
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
In Writing this week we began our Poetry Unit. We began by looking at various poems and discussed how they are best read aloud and even as a group. We then began to learn about figurative language and how it helps with making the writing stronger and giving a clear picture or movie, to the reader. We also talked about how as poets, we need to think about the world around us and to the feelings. Lastly we looked at our writing and how we could turn snippets of that into a poem.
