APPLICATIONS FOR THE CLASSROOM

The following are five educational apps that could be useful and beneficial in the classroom. Some apps that I have found are suitable for lower elementary, while some are suitable for upper elementary or middle school aged students.

STARFALL: LEARN TO READ

This app is suitable for children who are learning how to read, or who are honing fine reading skills; children about 5-7 years old. Activities such as rhyming, filling in spaces in words, and matching words and pictures are available. There are also videos available on the app to present ideas. This app helps to recognize letters and the sounds that they make in many contexts. This app is particularly good at improving spelling, and teaching kids the reasoning behind some spellings and grammar issues, such as when to use Y as a vowel. This app seems like a wonderful way to introduce children into the world of spelling. The following video is some examples of the ways to use the online version of this site.

DUOLINGO

Duolingo is a wonderful app that can be used to introduce students to the world of languages. Students can learn Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese. It presents a gamified version of grammar and translation exercises. A students starts at the very beginning level and there are repetitive assignments and exercises that allow students to learn a few words at a time. They can match words to picture or type out the English version of the translated word. Once they reach a certain number of points they level up, which unlocks new words and assignments.
Duolingo Intro

FUTABA

Futaba is a word app for kids that teachers them new words. The idea is to have four kids playing on four different iPads or Apple devices, and players compete against each other to see who can match a word to a picture the fastest. It is ideal for children 4-8, so it can be used in lower elementary classrooms. This allows for a way to make education fun. Teachers can even create their own content and add in their own pictures as to personalize the plan to a certain student or lesson.

APPS ARE A GREAT WAY TO EXPAND LEARNING INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

GRAMMAR JAMMERS

Grammar Jammers is designed for students in kindergarten to grade 5. It uses animated characters, songs, and rhymes to teach things like adjectives, nouns, and pronouns. Students select a group of words, like nouns or pronouns, and then see a small animation explaining the idea. There is then quizzes or exercises that follow to allow the students to put what they have learned into action.

JAMAROOS MUSICAL ABC'S

This app uses a combination of animations, music, and words to teach children certain conventions of the language and to expand their vocabulary. It also displays letters and explains each noise that the letter can make. Selecting a letter allows an animation to pop up, showing the students where the letter could fit in a sentence.
