The afternoon of March 22nd, our staff engaged in a professional development session around Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) tier 1 academic instruction. Tier 1 instruction is the instruction that takes place in your child’s classroom on a daily basis, which includes universal strategies for intervention and accommodations available to all students. Tier 2 instruction is designed to support the 10-15% of students that require additional supports and structures to be successful. Tier 3 instruction is designed to be much more intensive as a means to support up to 5% of students that require a more specialized instructional approach. Staff took time today to focus in on one of the 6 Embedded Practices of a lesson from our district Instructional Framework, which include:

  • Supportive and Productive Environment,
  • Learning Targets and Success Criteria,
  • Discourse,
  • Effective Questioning,
  • Descriptive Feedback, and
  • Balanced Assessment.

Time to work collaboratively around instruction is incredibly valuable and we appreciate the community supporting our staff having this time. We know that if we continue to strengthen our application of the Instructional Framework through this work, that our students will see the benefit in the classroom!

All 3rd and 1st grade students are performing in an evening concert on Wednesday, March 27th in the Guest cafeteria! Students will be showing off songs, dances, and instrument parts they have learned so far this school year. Families are invited to attend the performance that runs from 6:30-7:30pm. 3rd and 1st grade students wear their color run wildcat t-shirts – green for 3rd and orange for 1st. Why call it an informance? The students teach you, the audience, about the musical concepts behind the fun songs they perform. Inform + perform = Informance!

Considerations and Suggested Criteria for Testing:

To avoid student frustration, thoughtful consideration should come before registering

students for above grade-level Math testing. High-levels of success in the current Math

course, while important, is not the primary indicator of students successful with Math

course-skipping tests. Feel free to call Mrs. Fiebke-Lang if you have any questions.

The Walled Lake Schools Diversity Committee is seeking nominations for the “Kindness Matters Award”. We are currently celebrating the “Season for Nonviolence” in the Walled Lake Schools. The “Season for Nonviolence” is observed from January 30 (when Gandhi was assassinated) until April 4 (when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated). The “Kindness Matters Award” is intended to honor and recognize those individuals and organizations who promote peaceful and nonviolent ways to solve problems. Students, staff members, parents, community members, or organizations who are working toward the peaceful resolution of problems and/or teach about peace and harmony to others may be nominated for this award. Individuals or organizations receiving this award will be honored at the Walled Lake Schools Board of Education meeting on May 2, 2019.

Nomination forms for the “Kindness Matters Award” can be downloaded or are available in our office. If you have any questions about this award, please contact Nayal Maktari, Principal of Pleasant Lake Elementary, at 248-956-2802. Nominations are due by Friday, April 12, 2019.

Kindergarten Information

Incoming kindergartners must be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2019.
Exception: According to Michigan Law, a child may be enrolled in kindergarten
if he/she is not five years of age on September 1, 2019, but will be five years of
age not later than December 1, 2019 and parent or legal guardian notifies the school
district in writing (Kindergarten Waiver Form) that he or she intends to enroll the
child in kindergarten.

Research indicates that developmentally appropriate full-day schedules benefit kindergarten children academically, socially and emotionally. Our principals and teachers understand this and are well equipped to meet the needs of our kindergarten students.

Our kindergarten students begin to learn a whole host of reading, writing and mathematics concepts and learning strategies that give them the foundation for a successful elementary school career in Walled Lake Schools.

Information for Incoming Kindergarten Students - Please forward to families who may need to know!


Just over three years ago, we looked into the cost of adding a walking track to Mary Helen Guest Elementary. The quoted price was around $42,000. As our fundraising efforts increased, we made the decision to move forward with a smaller walking track and were recently quoted a new price of around $45,000 (with inflation). We are continuing our search for the right vendor for this project. So far, our school raised $15,610.70. We are still in need of donations to match our goal and receive our matching donation. Please consider any opportunities to donate and promote our efforts.


The Walled Lake Schools' Board of Education approved moving forward with a $316 million bond election May 7, 2019.

It will not be a tax increase to District residents. Superintendent Kenneth Gutman said: “We have a unique opportunity at this time where we can request a $316 million bond without a tax increase that will actually result in a tax decrease. The District currently has five outstanding debt obligations, four of which will be paid off within five years, and other factors that give the District this opportunity.”

There will be meetings at each of our schools as well as a plethora of information on our website.

Above all else, we would like to have a safe and respectful morning drop off and afternoon pick up. When this happens, our students start their day in a calm and peaceful manner and end their day in a safe manner.

  • If your child is eligible to ride the bus, please have them ride the bus.
  • Plan extra time to ensure your child is entering the classroom on time. Tardiness is a problem and is a life skill that develops at a young age.
  • Please do NOT cut across the parking lot, but instead, follow the loop around parked vehicles.
  • Please PULL up as far as you can before letting your student out of the car. Look for our 5th grade safety with the stop sign - that is how far you should pull up.
  • Please be cautious with your driving. WATCH for children getting out of vehicles and crossing at all times.
  • Feel free to use the bus loop when dropping students off for choir and math club ONLY
  • PLEASE demonstrate patience and kindness towards each other in our parking lots. We work diligently on teaching our students that “Kindness Always Wins” at Guest Elementary. It is important that our parents model it, also, at our school. Our students are watching us.



Birthdays are THE. BEST. Unfortunately, the days of sending in cupcakes for the class are long gone. Due to many food allergies, our school has adopted a NO FOOD (or candy) policy when it comes to birthday treats.

At our daily Wildcat Welcome, students having birthdays stand in front of the school and enjoy a quick birthday chant. Their names are on our slideshow and they recieve a small gift from the office.

Thank you for keeping all of our students safe.


The staff at Guest completely understand if you just want to invite just a few children from school, however, sending invitations for your student to hand out to only a select few can be very hurtful to others. Students are not allowed to hand out invitations (I know some teachers have communicated how they will help).

We are also asking that no invitations be handed out on the bus or at Prime Time Care. When you join PTA, you will receive a student directory that you can use for contact information.

Thank you for helping us eliminate distractions to learning.


On rare occasions, morning conditions occur that temporarily prevent the District from safely transporting students or requiring students to wait at a bus stop or walk to school. These conditions typically involve thick fog, winter weather or utility problems and historically required cancellation of school for the entire day.

Beginning this year, Walled Lake Schools has developed a two-hour delay procedure that could be used if conditions are expected to improve within two hours. This procedure, which will be used sparingly, will permit students to get to school safely and allow the District to conduct a credited day of school.

Parents are encouraged to develop a plan so their children can safely stay home for an additional two hours in the morning and have them go to a trusted alternate location to await the delayed start of school.

In the rare event that a two-hour delay is activated, the following procedures will be followed:

  1. The District’s phone system will be used to notify all school families and staff members of the delay (by approximately 5 a.m. when possible)
  2. Local news and radio stations will be contacted to report the delayed start.
  3. If conditions do not improve within two hours, classes may be cancelled for the entire day and the same methods of notification will be made.
  4. All bus stop pick-ups will be delayed by exactly two hours (i.e. if your bus stop is normally 8:36 a.m., it will be at 10:36 a.m. on delayed start days).
  5. All schools will start exactly two hours later than normal (i.e. if your school normally starts at 8:57 a.m., it will start at 10:57 a.m. on delayed start days).
  6. Prime Time Care will open at its normal time (must be pre-registered to use Prime Time Care).
  7. Essential service staff (custodians, food service, maintenance, mechanics and warehouse) will report at their normal starting time.
  8. Professional, administrative and support staff shall report as soon as possible and no less than 30 minutes prior to the delayed start time of their school or worksite.
  9. Students shall report to the class they would normally be in at the time they arrive for a two-hour delay.
  10. Breakfast will be available for the duration of the delay and lunch will be served at the normal time.
  11. Schools will be dismissed at their normal times at the end of the school day.
  12. Staff will be released at their normal times at the end of the school day.


2019-2020 CALENDAR

  • We will start the school year prior to Labor Day again.
  • Late starts (middle school) and early release (high schools) have been eliminated.
  • There are several half-days throughout the school year. As we have in the past, we will offer a reduced rate Prime Time Care service on each of these half days.

You might be wondering...Why are there so many half days?

Throughout the school year, there are eight half days that will be used for staff professional development. We recognize that half days can be inconvenient for families. That said, research has shown that when teachers receive ongoing, job-embedded professional development, they can increase student achievement by as much as 21 percentile points (Source). As a school and district, we are committed to continuous improvement and these eight half days are an essential part of that commitment. Although they may seem inconvenient, staff development opportunities are crucial to ensure we provide an exemplary education for our children.

SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD WITH IREADY - Research has shown students that complete 60 minutes of lessons a week per subject have the greatest gains.

Speak with your child about how using i-Ready will help him or her grow in school.

i-Ready shows where your child is doing well and where your child needs some more review. It helps teachers understand how to give your child the best support, and it lets your child see the gains they will make throughout the school year.

  • Help your child prepare for the Diagnostic by explaining that some questions on the Diagnostic test will be hard and that it’s okay not to know the answer to every question. Questions on the Diagnostic get a little harder each time a question is answered correctly, and a little easier when answered incorrectly. The goal is to figure out the math or reading level that is “just right” for your child, so your child should expect to see some questions that are too hard—and that’s okay! It means the test is working correctly.
  • Encourage your child to take each lesson and test question seriously.Emphasize “thinking before clicking,” because just clicking through answers will not give teachers an accurate picture of what is understood and what requires further instruction.
  • Help your child identify and become familiar with the different parts of the student dashboard.Log in to your child’s account with them and ask them to give you a “tour” of what they see.
  • Encourage your child to use the tools that will appear at the bottom of the screen in some lessons. Your child will sometimes see tools, like a calculator or dictionary, that will be helpful for completing an activity or answering a question on a quiz.
  • Discuss your child’s results by looking at “My Progress” together. First, look at the number of lessons shown as completed in i-Ready and celebrate that number with your child, who should feel good about this achievement alone. Then, take a look at the percentage of questions your child answered correctly in the quiz at the end of each lesson. In discussing these results, you might say
  • “Let’s look at how well you’ve been doing on your i-Ready lessons!”

    “What do you notice when you look at this data?”

    “Can you identify strengths from this report?”

    “What is something you feel like you are doing well?”

    “What areas are challenging to you?”

    “Let’s look at your data to see where and how we can work together to improve in those more challenging areas.”

  • If you are unsure about the expectations your child’s teacher has for the use of i-Ready at home, and which lessons your child should be completing, contact the teacher to clarify them.

Colder temperatures have arrived! We want all children to feel comfortable and enjoy being outside so we ask that you please send your student to school with all of the winter gear they may need including warm coats, hats, gloves, boots, and snow pants. Please label everything with your child's name in the event that their items become separated from them during the school day.

See guidelines below and be sure to discuss your expectations with your student(s):

  • We go outside unless it is below zero degrees (windchill)
  • Boots & Snow pants are required for students to play off the blacktop. We don't call home for dry clothes. This is their best protection.
  • Anytime it is 32 degree and below, students are expected to wear hats/gloves/mittens. Above 32 degrees, we leave it up to your discretion, but do give reminders and encouragement.
  • If a student wears a coat to school, they will need to wear it to recess unless the temperature rises to over 50 degrees.

Beginning Wednesday, January 9, 2019, our club will meet every Wednesday at Alpine Valley at 5:30pm and will run until the snow melts! (Weather Permitting)

We are required to have 20 kids each week in order to participate.

Our secretaries are available Monday through Friday to assist you from 8:00 AM-4:30 PM. If you have to change your child's dismissal plans, this must be done with us by 3:00 PM each day. We will notify your child of these changes in the classroom.

If you intend to keep your child home on a school day for any reason, please use our attendance hotline at 248-956-3390. You may leave a voicemail message 24 hours a day. IF we do not receive a call from you, we will call you to make sure that your child is indeed absent.

The Transportation Department will not issue bus passes for after school study, play dates etc. Bus passes will be issued for shared custody and sometimes day care, babysitting, or other emergencies. The Transportation Department will also issue year-long passes for in-district transfer and school of choice students when there is room on the bus.

If your child's transportation/dismissal for the end of the day changes in any way, please send in a note at the beginning of the day to your child's teacher AND the office. If this changes during the school day, please call our secretaries BEFORE 3:00 PM. We will do our best to ensure your child gets to the correct place at the end of the day, but we ask for your help with this by notifying us EARLY in the day or with a note. Thank you!
