Principals' Updates
October 17, 2023
Dear Wellington Families,
It was a pleasure to see many of you at the Fun Run last week. It was a lot of fun to celebrate physical fitness and spend time outside. We had a great time and are grateful to the PTO and our staff for all of their hard work and preparation.
We believe that it is our responsibility to enable each individual learner to grow. This commitment begins with the firm belief that all students belong in our classrooms and are able to learn. We recognize that not all children learn at the same time, at the same pace, and as the result of the same type of instruction. In order to facilitate the academic and social emotional development of each student we utilize Multi-Tiered Systems of Support throughout the building. This includes the following elements:
Teachers tailor instruction to meet students’ needs. This can be accomplished through adjusting content, process, product, and learning environments. Educations also meet with small groups and individual students throughout each school day.
Students may work with academic specialists to support their skill and strategy development within the general education curriculum. This support is dynamic and can occur in and out of the classroom. The duration can be as short as six weeks or for as long as the entire school year.
Teachers collaborate with academic and mental health specialists and students work with school counselors to develop social skills.
Students may participate in mandated services such as special education and English Language Education.
We will continue to share your students’ academic progress as well as any supports they may need throughout the school year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about your child’s achievement. We are proud of all that our students have learned already this year.
Please see the following note from Assistant Superintendent Lucia Sullivan about our Early Literacy Screening.
Dear Families,
Next week families of students in Grades 1-3 will receive the first Early Literacy Screening results letter of the year. Please remember that the DIBELS screening assessment is one piece of your child's literacy profile and it is not used to diagnose a disability or to determine eligibility.
In Belmont, educators consult a variety of assessments to plan responsive instruction. Reading specialists, special educators, and English Language Education (ELE) teachers partner with classroom teachers to ensure that all aspects of a child's learning profile are valued and considered.
Stayed tuned for upcoming opportunities to connect and learn more about literacy in the Belmont Public Schools.
Respectfully,
Lucia Sullivan
Interim Assistant Superintendent
Belmont Public Schools
