Celebrations
Points Update:
Seniors (Big thanks to Joey!) got first place for showing school spirit on Friday, and the sophomore class received points for second place. We will have attendance updates for the week of 1/29 - 2/2 next week.
January is School Board Recognition month. If you see one of our FISD board members, please thank them for the hard work they put into serving our district.
SMART TAG
Last week FHS students received a SMART TAG from the transportation department. Please read the attached documents to learn more about their purpose and functionality. These tags will be used for regular bus routes and for any trips students may take on a bus.
Please instruct your Staff and Students to not bend or punch holes in the cards as this will make the RFID stop working.
STAAR Interim Assessments
State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) Interim Assessments are online assessments that align to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and that help educators monitor student progress and predict student performance on STAAR. These assessments will be available at no cost to districts and open-enrollment charter schools, and they are not tied to accountability. It is important for students to do their best on these exams as it will help FHS staff best prepare them for the upcoming end of course exams in April.
Test Days:
Feb 1 - ELA I
Feb 6 - Biology & US History
Feb 8 - Algebra I
Feb 13 - ELA II
STAAR ELA II Field Test
As required by House Bill 3906, 86th Texas Legislature, 2019, STAAR underwent a redesign to better align the assessments with classroom instruction. The redesign was implemented in the 2022–2023 school year and included the addition of writing to reading assessments and more non-multiple-choice questions such as open-ended or constructed-response items. Although the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has made a concerted effort to minimize the amount of instructional time used for state testing purposes generally and particularly for stand-alone field testing, a stand-alone field test is necessary to develop future state assessments with writing components. All students at a selected campus who are enrolled in an assigned grade or course and who are scheduled to take the corresponding STAAR assessment in spring 2024 should participate in the stand-alone field test. This includes emergent bilingual students and students who receive special education services, unless a student requires an accommodation that is not available for the field test.
FHS was selected by TEA to participate in the ELA II Field test which will take place on February 7th.
UIL Academics
Attention students! It is time to explore UIL Academics events. Please view a list of these events on our FHS webpage. Please email Mrs. Draper if you are interested or stop by room 25. More detailed information about each event can be found on the UIL Academic page at uiltexas.org.
Our district competition is April 4-5 in Comfort and Llano. One-Act Play UIL competes on March 1st and is looking for both cast and crew. Spots are limited, so contact Mr. Daniell in room 24 today!
Remember, UIL Academics has over 1 million dollars of scholarships available and looks fabulous on your college resume!
Currently students can begin by working towards on of the two essay contests below.
Watch the video below to see how the essay contests are a good way to consider qualifying for scholarship opportunities. The essays are due February 14th.
FAFSA is Open (Senior Graduation Requirement)
Texas has adopted a new graduation requirement- FAFSA (as of the graduating class of 2022). The FAFSA window opened on December 31st because the FAFSA has been updated to be more user friendly. You can complete the process at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. Please apply for school year 2024-2025.
Early bird gets the worm- and it must be completed by March 15th to have the opportunity to receive the most state funding. Once you have completed your FAFSA, you will receive a “Confirmation” page with a confirmation number. Please submit either the page or a picture of the page to auranga@florenceisd.net
